An artist’s studio is where creativity meets canvas and where stories are brought to life. Over the years August House has housed many artists from across the African continent including Diane Victor, Mary Sibande and Nelson Makamo. It is described as “an exclusive art building, housing more than 50 independent, pan-African contemporary artists, in private art studios, known to the locals as ‘The Artists’ Playground’.”

This 1940’s building was once a  light warehouse. August House now celebrates 11 years “as a well-established, local and international contemporary African artists’ community, within walking distance from the Maboneng, Arts on Main district.”

August House also has a gallery space where you can peruse through different works or if you prefer an up-close and personal interaction with the artists, their Open Studio exhibitions are the perfect platform to get to know the artists, their studios and purchase work directly from them.

This opportunity doesn’t come too often as the Open Studio exhibitions only take place two or three times a year. August House is found at 76 End st, Doornfontein and is open to local and international artists who are looking for residency or studio space. If you’re in the area familiarise yourself with this address because when the next Open Studio takes place, you don’t want to miss it.
