The Mall of the South isn’t very central, but those lucky enough to be in the South of Johannesburg get to experience the architecture, the natural sunlight streaming through the glass at the food court and naturally the wide food offering, Butcher Block being one of the favorites.
I decided to spend a Saturday afternoon at the restaurant and discover what’s hot. Winter is always the best time to dig into a special or two because who can say ‘no’ to a hearty meal? They’re meat specialists and red wine and red meat are perfect to fight of any winter blues. Butcher Block currently has a R75 specials on 5 of their winter dishes, but I opted for the lamb shank instead.
The meal was paired with a generous glass of 2017 Beyerskloof Pinotage. It was served with mash and rustic carrots that were perfectly cooked, leaving some crunch and adding more texture to the dish. When you hear about lamb falling off the bone, how can you not take a moment to smile? Even if you have a small apatite, you’ll defiantly consider finishing the large portion.
What stood out was how service is treated as a team-effort and I was always attended to. No one looms over you and you’re able to enjoy the delicious meal in comfort. Finding a good steak house isn’t too easy, but when you find one where they know their meat as well as Butcher Block does, you’ll be sure to come back for more.
