Joburg Pride is on the social calendar for everyone who identifies with or is part of the LGBTQI community. Pride is a time to just be yourself, without judgement or fear, to be unapologetically YOU.  On the 28th of October, Melrose Arch is going to be draped in the colour yellow from the Pride flag. This colour symbolises Happiness.

Joburg Pride has become more diverse after 2016 and because of this, the theme for 2017  highlights the respect for diversity in all its forms, from sexuality to gender, race, identity and more.

Besides taking responsibility for the festivities, Pride plays a big role in the lives of the LGBTQI community inside and outside the borders of SA. “We have been approached by European and African Pride’s to share our rebrand initiative. We have been approached by InterPride (the community responsible for world pride) to host a roundtable and have a Vice President as a keynote speaker for this year’s celebration.” Joburg Pride is setting global standards and it’s our role to encourage and support them.

Organising an event of this size doesn’t come without its challenges and hard work as “we rely on the goodwill and generosity of the corporates and a small percentage on self to generate revenue. Ensuring all the correct requirements are filed to ensure we have an approved event by the city’s Operation committee – It takes 11 months of the year to plan this event by a team of volunteers”

This year’s Pride March and festivities are not to be missed especially when looking at the response from last year. “The feedback and positive reactions are overwhelming. We had, for months after the 2016 event, been requested to ensure we don’t change the venue, we received such positive encouragement with our entertainment line-up and we have been added to the Prides of the world list.”

If your outfit for Pride isn’t planned yet, what are you waiting for? See you there!
