Over 60% of men living with chronic illnesses do not have dread disease cover

1Life research shows that 61% of men living with chronic illnesses such as prostate cancer, diabetes, and HIV do not have dread disease cover. This means that more than half of chronically ill South African men in this researched group, do not have the necessary financial means to cover their medical bills. These stats are alarming, given the reality that in South Africa, one in 16 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime, reports the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA).

In South Africa, and globally, prostate cancer is the most frequent cancer amongst men, after lung cancer, and the fifth leading cause of cancer death among men. Moreover, if you also consider that most employers are now ditching compulsory medical aid, with most young people not volunteering to have this in place, the chances of men screening in time to prevent or manage chronic illnesses are diminishing.

This is a devastating reality, not only from a health perspective, but also from a financial security and generational wealth perspective.

Talking points:

  • The top 5 leading chronic illnesses amongst men in South Africa and the importance of screening.
  • The importance of having dread disease cover
    • How to choose the ideal dread disease cover
    • What the dread disease cover can be used for
  • What do 1Life stats say about chronic illnesses and dread disease cover:
  • Only 38% of men living with chronic illnesses have dread disease cover
  • Over 90% of South African youth (20-35 years old) in South Africa are living without dread disease cover.
  • How having a good financial plan can help consumers take care of their family’s financial future.
