Wings Over Winelands Airshow Cancelled After Severe Weather Causes Damage at Vergelegen Wine Estate

What was set to be one of the Western Cape’s most anticipated aviation lifestyle events of the year has now been grounded by extreme weather conditions sweeping across the province.

Organisers of the 2026 Wings Over Winelands Airshow have officially confirmed the cancellation of the event, which had been scheduled to take place on Saturday, 16 May 2026 at the iconic Vergelegen Wine Estate.

The announcement follows severe weather impacting large parts of the Western Cape, including a Category 8 weather warning that has caused significant damage to sections of the venue and surrounding infrastructure.

The cancellation marks a disappointing turn for aviation enthusiasts, families and visitors who had been preparing for a full day of aerial displays, hospitality experiences and family entertainment in the heart of the Cape Winelands.

Severe Weather Forces Difficult Decision

According to organisers, the decision to cancel the event came after careful assessment of both the venue conditions and broader safety risks posed by the ongoing weather system.

Aircraft scheduled to participate in the airshow were expected to be ferried from Gauteng to the Western Cape ahead of the event. However, due to the deteriorating conditions and damage sustained at the venue, those aircraft movements were officially stood down.

The organisers confirmed that safety remained the overriding priority throughout the decision-making process.

“After careful assessment the organisers have prioritised the safety of pilots, participants, staff and spectators leading to the cancellation of the event.”

The announcement was issued by Smoke On Go on 12 May 2026.

A Major Event Brought to a Halt

The Wings Over Winelands Airshow had been expected to draw aviation fans and lifestyle travellers from across South Africa to experience a unique combination of aviation excellence and Winelands hospitality.

Set against the backdrop of the historic Vergelegen Wine Estate, the event programme was scheduled to feature:

  • The Marksman Aerobatic Display Team
  • The Raptors RV Display Team
  • The Aérospatiale Gazelle
  • The iconic Aero L-29 Delfín jet display

The flying programme was due to run from 10:00 to 15:00 with commentary by renowned aviation commentator Ian Fraser.

Beyond the aerial performances, the event also planned to offer premium wine experiences, gourmet food offerings, craft stalls and family-friendly entertainment throughout the estate.

Over recent years, Wings Over Winelands has grown into one of the country’s most distinctive lifestyle airshows — blending aviation culture with the scenic luxury of the Cape Winelands.

Refunds Confirmed for Ticket Holders

Organisers have confirmed that all tickets purchased for the event will be fully refunded through Quicket.

Further communication regarding the possibility of a future replacement date will only be announced once weather conditions improve and a full reassessment becomes possible.

“The organisers extend their sincere regret for the cancellation and thank all partners sponsors and supporters for their understanding and continued support.”

Weather Impact Continues Across the Western Cape

The cancellation also highlights the growing impact severe weather systems continue to have across the Western Cape, where heavy rainfall, flooding risks and infrastructure damage have disrupted multiple outdoor events and travel operations in recent days.

For organisers, pilots and spectators alike, the cancellation is undoubtedly disappointing — but one rooted in necessary caution.

In aviation, safety has always come first.

And in the face of dangerous weather conditions, grounding the event became the only responsible decision.
