A new hospitality certification launched in Cape Town is putting an often-overlooked part of the guest experience under the spotlight: the bed.
Peace Of Sleep™, described as the world’s first certification standard addressing allergy management and sleep hygiene in hospitality, has launched from South Africa with a focus on creating a verifiable standard for the space where hotel guests spend a significant part of their stay.
The certification arrives against the backdrop of an estimated one in three guests living with some form of allergy sensitivity. According to Peace Of Sleep™, the initiative aims to address a gap in hospitality standards by introducing specific assurance around the mattress and sleeping environment.
Putting the Mattress at the Centre of the Guest Experience
Hotels already operate established standards covering areas such as housekeeping, linen and turndown services. Peace Of Sleep™ argues that the mattress has received far less specific attention, despite guests spending around 50% of their stay in bed.
“Every part of the guest experience gets scrutinised, except this one,” says Charlie Wright, CEO and founder of Peace Of Sleep™.
Wright points to the growing focus on wellness across hospitality, including wellness menus, aromatherapy and mood lighting. However, he says there has been limited specific or provable assurance around the bed itself.
Peace Of Sleep™ has been developed to address that gap through a certification model focused on allergy management and sleep hygiene.
More Than a Badge
Peace Of Sleep™ is built around a fully audited, on-demand allergy-management process.
According to the company, the process is dry, chemical-free and designed to create zero disruption to hotel operations. Rooms remain sellable throughout the process, with no downtime or stated loss of revenue.
The certification also includes ongoing oversight. Properties are not simply awarded the certification once and then left without further verification.
Instead, the system operates across three tiers:
- Assured
- Distinguished
- Signature
The tiers differentiate certification according to service frequency, providing properties with a pathway from initial certification to a higher standard of ongoing guest assurance.
The intention is for Peace Of Sleep™ to operate as a visible mark of distinction — one that properties earn, maintain and display as part of their guest experience.
“Holding this certification is something a General Manager or property owner can be proud of,” says Wright. “This is not just a promise, it is proof that guest wellbeing has been taken as seriously as everything else on the property.”
Tintswalo Collection Becomes First Boutique Group to Achieve Certification Across Its Properties
The certification has already attracted interest from the hospitality sector.
Since its soft launch in March 2026, Peace Of Sleep™ says uptake has moved quickly.
The Tintswalo Collection recently became the first boutique hospitality group in South Africa to hold Peace Of Sleep™ certification across all of its properties.
The milestone is presented as an early indication of interest in the service, particularly within the top end of the hospitality market.
A South African Hospitality Innovation
While hospitality standards are often introduced to South Africa from international markets, Peace Of Sleep™ has taken a different route.
The certification was developed and piloted in Cape Town’s boutique hospitality sector before being positioned for adoption by properties internationally.
For Wright, the South African origins of the certification are an important part of its story.
“There’s no reason the next hospitality standard has to come from London, Dubai, or New York,” says Wright. “We built this here, tested it here, and proved it here first.”
He adds that operating outside traditional hospitality innovation centres provided an opportunity to focus on an area that had not previously received the same level of attention.
The Next Chapter for Guest Assurance
Peace Of Sleep™ is currently being introduced to a limited number of properties by invitation ahead of a broader rollout.

With its launch, the Cape Town-developed certification is placing allergy management and sleep hygiene alongside the wider conversation about hospitality, wellness and guest experience — with the bed itself becoming the focus of a new standard.
For an industry built around making guests feel at home, Peace Of Sleep™ is asking hotels to look more closely at one of the most fundamental parts of that experience: where the guest sleeps.
