Absa Run Your City 10KM ignites 2026 series in Gqeberha

The streets of Gqeberha did more than host a race this weekend — they carried thousands of personal stories, each one pounding the tar with purpose.

On 3 March 2026, nearly 5 000 runners and walkers lined up for the Absa Run Your City Gqeberha 10KM, launching the 2026 series with a surge of energy that turned the coastal city into a moving tapestry of ambition, resilience and community spirit.

Now in its fourth consecutive year in Gqeberha, the event has cemented itself as more than a date on the racing calendar. It is a gathering point for people from all walks of life — first-time 10KM participants stepping forward with nervous excitement, seasoned athletes chasing personal bests, and dedicated walkers moving with steady intention.

This year’s theme, “Take Your Story to the Streets. Take It to the Max,” wasn’t just printed on race material — it was lived. From the opening strides to the final stretch, participants dug deep, pushing limits and proving that every kilometre carries meaning.

More than a race — a movement

According to Jabu Nsibanyoni, Absa Head of Sponsorship, the series continues to evolve beyond competition.

“We’re challenging every runner and walker to go further, feel stronger, and chase the goals that matter most to them. It’s about more than distance, it’s about determination, resilience, and the pride that comes with giving your absolute best,” he said.

That ethos has helped transform the broader Absa Run Your City Series into a platform for shared purpose. The atmosphere in Gqeberha reflected exactly that: whistles, cheers, vuvuzelas and relentless encouragement from supporters who understand that the road belongs to everyone.

Turning kilometres into change

While medals and memories were earned at the finish line, the impact of the day stretches far beyond it.

Through Absa’s R1 Campaign, every kilometre run or walked by Team Absa members on Strava converts into tangible change. To date, more than R10 million has been raised to support school vegetable gardens across South Africa — initiatives that nourish young minds while strengthening communities.

“Our impact extends well beyond the route,” Nsibanyoni added. “In 2026, we are pushing for even greater impact, together. Whether you’re a seasoned runner, a committed walker, or part of the crowd bringing the vibe with whistles and vuvuzelas, you are an essential part of this movement. Your energy fuels the series, and your participation helps turn collective effort into lasting change.”

In a country where sport often becomes a unifying force, the series has managed to blend performance with purpose — ensuring that progress is measured not only in minutes and seconds, but in meals grown and communities supported.

Next stop: The Mother City

With Gqeberha setting a high benchmark for the season, attention now shifts to the next chapter: the Absa Run Your City Cape Town 10KM.

On 10 May 2026, Cape Town will host the next surge of runners and supporters ready to chase bold goals. Entries are selling fast, with limited spots remaining. Absa Rewards members can enjoy up to 30% real cash back on race entries when registering early — an added incentive to step up to the start line.

As the 2026 series unfolds, one thing is clear: this is not simply about racing through city streets. It is about claiming space, embracing challenge, and taking personal stories — of perseverance, growth and community — into the open.

The road is waiting. The stories are ready. And South Africa is running them into history.
