South African rugby star Cheslin Kolbe is bringing his extraordinary story to Cape Town. On Thursday, 22 October 2026, the double Rugby World Cup winner will launch his memoir, Cheslin Kolbe: Sidestepping the Odds, at Cavendish Square in collaboration with Exclusive Books.

The event begins at 19h00, with guests invited to arrive from 18h30. Rugby fans and book lovers will have the opportunity to meet Kolbe, hear about his journey and have their copies of the book signed by the Springbok star.

Published by Pan Macmillan South Africa, the memoir was written in collaboration with award-winning broadcaster and author David O’Sullivan. It tells the story of a young boy from Kraaifontein who overcame expectations to become one of the most celebrated players in world rugby.

From Kraaifontein to the World Stage

Kolbe’s journey is a powerful reminder that the expectations of others do not have to define your future.

Growing up, he was repeatedly told that he was too small to succeed in professional rugby. Yet, through determination, courage and an extraordinary belief in himself, he went on to reach the highest levels of the sport.

His achievements include winning two Rugby World Cups with the Springboks and earning a place among rugby’s most admired players.

Now, Cheslin Kolbe: Sidestepping the Odds offers readers a closer look at the story behind those achievements. Beyond the trophies and international recognition, the memoir explores the family, faith and community that shaped Kolbe, as well as the challenges he overcame along the way.

It is an opportunity to discover the person behind the player and the experiences that helped shape his remarkable career.

An Exclusive Book Launch and Signing

The event will take place on the lower level of Cavendish Square, with Kolbe in conversation with David O’Sullivan.

Guests can look forward to hearing more about the memoir and the experiences behind his journey from Kraaifontein to the top of international rugby.

Copies of Cheslin Kolbe: Sidestepping the Odds will be available to purchase on the evening. Attendees will also have the opportunity to have their books signed by Kolbe himself.

Faizah Behardien, Centre Manager at Cavendish Square, welcomed the opportunity to host the Springbok star.

“Cheslin Kolbe is a true South African hero whose story has inspired millions, and we’re delighted to welcome him at Cavendish Square. As a proud son of Cape Town, his journey from Kraaifontein to the very top of world rugby is extraordinary, and we’re excited to give fans the opportunity to meet him and celebrate the launch of his book,” said Behardien.
