Home gin bars are all the rage with more people getting interested in curating their home bar setups, exploring different gin brands, and experimenting with unique cocktail recipes. What makes it even more appealing is that it offers a sophisticated ambiance for entertaining guests. But just because you’re doing it at home doesn’t mean that anything goes. Jazz Adams is the Western Cape Sales Manager for Whitley Neill Gin and is a seasoned expert when it comes to mixing and serving gin cocktails. He says the secret is in the flavour and matching garnishes and tonics that complements the botanicals found in a specific gin. He shares some of his top tips for setting up your home gin bar.

Personalise your collection

Most people think they need to have a large display of different spirits in their bar to make it impressive, but what makes a home bar far more authentic and personal is a small collection of gins with distinct flavour profiles and botanical infusions. This trend emphasizes quality over quantity, with a focus on the craftsmanship.

Creative Mixology and Signature Cocktails

A memorable and delicious cocktail makes all the difference and by experimenting with flavours, infusions, and garnishes you’ll be able to craft your own signature drinks. If you’re daring enough you can even turn to social media to share your concoctions and inspire others to try your recipes.

Gin bar tools and design

The look and feel of your bar is just as important as the taste of the cocktails you make. Invest in elegant glassware, stylish bar tools such as a shaker, strainer, muddler, jigger, and a bar spoon. These tools are the foundation for creating a wide range of gin cocktails. A stylish and functional cocktail shaker is particularly important for achieving that perfect mix and chill. Good lighting and even funky bar stools will complete the look. If you don’t have a dedicated bar area you can also use a drinks trolley, glass cabinet or a pantry display.

Local garnishes

Always have an array of fresh garnishes that are locally sourced supporting a farm-to-glass philosophy. Citrus fruits, herbs, lemons, limes, and oranges are versatile additions, while herbs like basil, mint, and rosemary are great options. The trend is to elevate the drinking experience with ingredients that reflect the flavours of the season and the locality, always keeping in mind the flavour profile of the botanicals in the gin.

Tonic and Mixer Choices

Keep your bar stocked with premium mixers that complement the nuanced flavours of their chosen gins. This trend reflects a deeper appreciation for the role mixers play in enhancing the overall drinking experience. Don’t forget about classic soda water and tonic for the quintessential G&T.

In summary, whether you’re a seasoned enthusiast or a curious newcomer, the home gin bar trend invites everyone to savour the art of crafting and enjoying exceptional cocktails in the comfort of home. Cheers to the renaissance of the home gin bar!
