Having recently announced the dates for the upcoming Joburg Film Festival, the team today confirmed the dates and venues for the Youth and Audience Programme, in addition to opening submission for the Young Voices Competition.

The festival, set to run from Tuesday, 27th February to Sunday, 3rd March, brings together filmmakers, industry professionals, and cinema enthusiasts for a celebration of storytelling through the art of film.

The sixth edition of the festival’s Film Programme will this year screen over 60 feature titles, and will also include a dynamic range of audience and industry initiatives and conversations including the Industry Programme, the Youth and Audience Development Programme, the Joburg Film Society and the JBX B2B Content Market.

With the festivals on-going vision to prioritize the growth and development of young South African filmmakers, the Youth and Audience Programme will once again conduct and host a series of skills development / empowerment workshops for young film creatives and content creators in the province.

The outreach programme focuses mainly on young filmmakers without a formal film and television education, training and background with a comprehensive two-day format workshop.  The sessions will provide insights into the various disciplines of filmmaking whilst providing attendees with the opportunity to network with industry leaders who present and facilitate these sessions. The programme will conclude with a free screening of Four Walls at the end of the second day.

Session topics include:

  • Scriptwriting
  • Acting Workshop
  • Story and Conceptualisation
  • Content Creation (on social media)
  • DOP master class
  • Directing Master class

The workshops will kick off at The Peoples Theatre @ Joburg Theatre in Braamfontein on the 27th – 28th January, followed by the second leg at the Gauteng Archives Centre in Kagiso, Mogale City –  on the 10th -11th February.  Registration can be done HERE.

The exciting and highly anticipated JFF Young Voice Competition also makes a return.

This competition celebrates the natural creative talent of young filmmakers and is open to all young aspiring African filmmakers based in South Africa between the ages of 18 and 35 years. Filmmakers are asked to create and submit their own 5-minute short film using the theme ‘The South Africa You Want to See – 30 Years on’. Three entries will be shortlisted by an esteemed panel of expert judges in the first phase with one overall winner chosen at the festival’s awards gala night on Saturday, 2nd March. The overall winner will receive a scholarship and various other incredible sponsored prizes.

Submissions for the Young Voices Competition is currently open, click HERE.
