LET THE WELLINGTON FAMILY FESTIVAL SPUR YOUR NEXT COUNTRY GETAWAY

Rolling hills and cool, lush boltholes; slow village mornings and afternoons-become-evenings of fine food and wine; soaring mountain spires and endless rejuvenation. These are but some of the delights beckoning from the Cape’s magnificent Wellington.

Under the revival of the Wellington Wine Route, a fresh breeze blows, and it all begins with a brand new Go Wellington identity and Go Wellington Family Festival. The festival takes place on Thursday, March 21 – Human Rights Day and the year’s very first public holiday.

To this is added a new website – www.gowellington.co.za – that welcomes the return of those who’ve visited before, and urges those who’ve never been, to go taste, explore, eat, sleep and shop.

It’s time to go just a little further: Go Wellington.

Wellington is a 55min-drive from Cape Town CBD; 40min from Stellenbosch; 60min from Worcester or Franschhoek; and 30min from Malmesbury.

“People think Wellington is really remote, whereas the contrary is true,” says Go Wellington chairman David Sonnenberg. “In fact, very few places can boast being off the beaten track within such close proximity to major centres.”

For many who’ve discovered its charm, Wellington’s essence is defined by its mountains. The natural amphitheatre formed by the Drakenstein – or “dragon rock” – range, inspires the idea its misty peaks conceal creatures of myth and legend.

For others, Wellington is a place of rich history resplendent in its classical architecture, abundant natural beauty and award-winning wineries and distilleries. Bottomline: Wellington is a wholesome country community with heart.

New website – a gateway to a world of wonder

Go Wellington’s new digital presence is the place to begin planning a trip to the region. Contained within the pages of www.gowellington.co.za are links to a dizzying array of experiences available. These include wine tours and tastings, skydiving, hiking the mountains, trail running and MTB trails; where to buy products exclusive to Wellington; as well as dining and accommodation options to suit every pocket, including family friendly destinations.

Go Wellington Family Festival

March 21 sees the official launch of the Go Wellington Wine Route and its initiatives, including the first Go Wellington Family Festival. The event takes place at the Old Tannery, a charming shopping district developed on the premises of the former Western Tanning & Boot Company of 1871.

On offer is the opportunity to sample wares from over a dozen of the Go Wellington Wine Route members, a variety of food stalls, children’s activities as well as live music. There will be café and cocktail-style seating with umbrellas.

Details:

  • Date and times: Thursday, March 21 from 10:00 to 18:00.
  • Location: Old Tannery, on the outskirts of Wellington towards Hermon.
  • Tickets: R150/adult and R50/child (under 18) – available for purchase via Quicket.
