A proudly South African hard seltzer brand is stepping onto a much bigger retail stage.
Nawty Water has secured a new listing with Pick n Pay, expanding its presence to more than 1,000 stores nationwide.
For the independent brand, the move marks another chapter in a growth story built around an unusual order of priorities: community first, brand second and sales third.
Founded by Michael Tones and Jason Reid, Nawty Water says its approach has always been about building demand from the community rather than chasing distribution simply for the sake of being everywhere.
Now, that strategy is taking the brand into one of South Africa’s established retail networks.
From Community to the Retail Shelf
For Nawty Water, the Pick n Pay listing is about more than gaining additional shelf space.
It represents the next step in a journey that the founders say began with building a community around the brand.
Tones explains that the philosophy is not simply marketing language.
It is written into the company’s internal manifesto:
“Community first. Brand protected. Sales follow.”
And now, the sales are following.
“Seeing Nawty Water listed by Pick n Pay is a massive moment for us,” says Tones.
“We’ve spent our time building the brand from the community outwards. We never wanted to manufacture hype or chase distribution for the sake of saying we were everywhere. We wanted people to want Nawty first. This listing feels like the next natural step.”
The result is a significant expansion of Nawty Water’s retail footprint and access to a much broader retail audience.
The Big Retail Break
For emerging South African brands, securing space within an established retail network can represent an important stage of growth.
It gives entrepreneurs the opportunity to reach new consumers, test their proposition at greater scale and work towards building sustainable businesses.
For Nawty Water, the Pick n Pay listing creates that opportunity while the founders remain focused on protecting the character that helped build the brand.
Because bigger does not necessarily have to mean different.
Growing Without Losing the Attitude
Nawty’s philosophy deliberately moves away from competing on price, manufactured scarcity and once-off promotional thinking.
Instead, its sales strategy centres on community pull, retailer relationships and building repeat drinkers.
That approach becomes even more important as the brand enters a significantly larger retail environment.
Tones says there can be a temptation for brands to change their identity when they land a major retail listing.
“There’s always a temptation when you get a big retail listing to suddenly start behaving like a big corporate brand,” he says.
“We’re not interested in that. We want Nawty to get bigger without becoming less Nawty.”
It is a line that captures the challenge facing many growing independent brands: scaling the business without losing the personality that made people care about it in the first place.
A Bigger Platform for a Homegrown Brand
The new listing also shines a light on the relationship between established retailers and South African entrepreneurs.
For emerging brands, retail platforms can create opportunities to move beyond smaller-scale operations and introduce their products to a much broader consumer audience.
Nawty Water’s expansion into more than 1,000 Pick n Pay stores nationwide gives the brand that opportunity.
It also places a proudly South African independent brand on a much larger retail stage as it enters its next phase of growth.
Just in Time for Summer
With summer approaching, the timing adds another layer to the milestone.
After building its identity around community, taste and a confidently cheeky, inclusive personality, Nawty Water is now preparing to meet a much wider retail audience.
And for the founders, there is something particularly satisfying about seeing the brand appear on one important list.
The Pick n Pay one.
For Nawty Water, the journey from community to retail shelf is another step forward.
But if its founders have anything to say about it, getting bigger will not mean becoming less authentic.
The brand is growing. The attitude stays Nawty.
