For more than two decades, school holidays at Canal Walk have been synonymous with live family entertainment. This year, the shopping centre’s beloved winter theatre tradition returns with a production of Peter Pan, marking the 24th theatrical presentation to take centre stage at the popular Cape Town destination.
Running from 27 June to 19 July 2026, the production transforms Canal Walk’s Centre Court into the enchanting world of Neverland, where adventure, imagination and timeless storytelling take flight.
A Winter Tradition That Continues to Inspire
Each winter, Canal Walk creates a theatrical experience designed to bring families together. Over the years, generations of theatre lovers have filled the venue, making the annual production one of Cape Town’s most cherished school holiday traditions.
This year’s choice of Peter Pan feels particularly fitting. The classic story, first created by J.M. Barrie, has delighted audiences around the world for more than a century with its themes of wonder, friendship and the enduring magic of childhood.
“Peter Pan marks our 24th production here at Canal Walk, and it feels like the right story to mark the occasion,” says Vanessa Herbst, Marketing Manager at Canal Walk.
“For more than two decades, school holidays at Canal Walk have meant live theatre for local families. Watching children return year after year, now bringing their own children along, is what keeps this tradition going.”
A Journey to Neverland
The story begins in the Darling family nursery in London, where Wendy, John and Michael encounter the mischievous Peter Pan while he searches for his missing shadow.
After Wendy helps him stitch it back into place, Peter introduces the children to the extraordinary ability to fly. Together, they soar away to Neverland, a magical world where children never grow old.
Their adventure introduces them to colourful characters including Tinker Bell, the Lost Boys and Tiger Lily. Standing in their way is the notorious Captain Hook, Peter’s long-time rival, who remains determined to settle an old score involving a crocodile and his missing hand.
The result is a fast-moving adventure filled with excitement, humour, daring rescues and unforgettable moments that have made Peter Pan a favourite across generations.
A Talented Cast Brings the Magic to Life
The production features a talented cast led by Killian Blerk as Peter Pan and Rachael Saunders as Wendy Darling.
Jeremy Richard takes on the dual roles of Mr Darling and the infamous Captain Hook, while Kaira Naidoo stars as Tinker Bell. Evan Marinakos appears as Pirate Smee.
The ensemble is completed by Tim Truran, Jade Tayla, Andi Colombo, Anzio September, Asanda Mngadi and Jonan Mouton, who portray a variety of memorable characters ranging from mermaids to Lost Boys.
Under the direction of acclaimed theatre-makers Fred Abrahamse and Marcel Meyer, audiences can expect a visually engaging production filled with imagination, theatrical flair and family-friendly entertainment.
“Peter Pan gave us the chance to bring flight, fairy dust and a touch of mischief to the Canal Walk stage,” say Abrahamse and Meyer.
“J.M. Barrie’s story has lasted more than a century because it asks a simple question: what would it mean to never grow up? We wanted Cape Town families to feel that wonder for themselves, pirates, mermaids and all.”
Entertainment With Purpose
Beyond delivering magical family entertainment, this year’s production also supports an important cause.
A portion of ticket and programme sales will benefit the Reach for a Dream Foundation, helping the organisation continue its work of fulfilling dreams for children living with cancer.
“Each ticket bought helps us grant another wish to a child who needs something to look forward to,” explains Heidi Rowley, Head of Fundraising at Reach for a Dream Foundation Cape Town.
The partnership adds an extra layer of meaning to an event already focused on creating memorable experiences for children and families.
Book Early for a Winter Favourite
With previous Canal Walk productions regularly selling out, families are encouraged to secure tickets in advance.
As seating remains unreserved, arriving early is recommended to ensure the best possible viewing experience.
For parents looking for an unforgettable school holiday outing, Peter Pan promises an hour of laughter, adventure, imagination and theatrical magic. Whether it is a child’s first visit to Neverland or a nostalgic return for adults who grew up with the story, Canal Walk’s latest production offers a reminder that some adventures never grow old.
