“Hong Kong typically enjoys warmer weather between June and September, and this is when the city really comes alive as Hong Kongers soak in the sun and hit the beach,” says Shanna Docherty, Regional Head of Trade Sales for Middle East, and Africa (MEA). “For South Africans who are accustomed to beautiful summers and plenty of activities that are ideal for warm weather, Hong Kong is the ideal destination to continue their fun in the sun.”

Chase the sun and experience Hong Kong’s summer the right way. Here are a few ideas to add to your Hong Kong travel itinerary.

  1. Water sports in Hoi Ha Wan Marine Park

Hoi Ha Wan offers a splendid summer retreat to those looking to enjoy a day of splashing and learning about the diverse marine life inhabiting this park, but it also happens to be a much-loved and highly rated destination for water sport. From Kayaking to scuba diving and stand-up paddling on the water, Hoi ha Wan is a must-visit during Hong Kong’s hotter months.

  1. Escape to Tai O fishing village

Tai O is a remote village located on the western side of the promenade at Lantau Island and is home to one of the city’s best wet markets. Watch locals bargain for the best deals on exotic and everyday seafood, enjoy lunch at one of the many well-appointed restaurants or have your pick of delectable street food eats made hot and fresh right before you as you wander through the area. Cat lovers will also appreciate the visit, with plenty of feline friends around to keep them company.

  1. Enjoy the thrill of the Dragon Boat races

Every summer, Hong Kong hosts the much-anticipated Hong Kong International Dragon Boat Races, taking place from 15 to 16 June 2024 at Victoria harbour. The two-day event, located off Tsim Sha Tsui east Promenade, sees athletes from around the world give it their all in an adrenaline-packed race to ‘beat the drum’ to the finish line. Admission is free, and you can look forward to a rousing day filled with loads of cheering, vibrant colours all around, and Hong Kong patriotism at its finest.

  1. Sail into the sunset at Victoria Harbour

If a quiet cocktail with that special someone or dinner and drinks with a few good friends is more your pace, then a sunset boat cruise on Victoria Harbour is just the ticket. Book a ride on the many luxury cruise liners available and enjoy a unique view of Hong Kong’s stunning coast and cityscapes by night. You’ll also have a front row seat to the famous Symphony of Lights; a unique laser light displays on the faces of the tallest skyscrapers that line the harbour.

  1. Take a hike in Shek O Country Park

If it’s fresh air and fitness you’re after, then look no further than Shek O. This 701-hectare marine park offers three trails suited to all fitness levels. Dragons Back is the most famous attraction of the park, offering an exceptionally scenic hike along a semi-paved trail from Shek O to Big Wave Bay. Shek O Beach is also a beloved spot for surfing the waves, not to mention a quiet, clean stretch of sandy beach to enjoy a good book.

  1. Make a splash at Hong Kong Waterworld

For South Africans longing to return to the water, Hong Kong summers are the perfect time to head to Waterworld Ocean Park in Hong Kong. Dubbed “Asia’s first all-weather, year-round seaside water park”, Waterworld promises a day filled with fun in the sun with nine mega water slides, a thrilling wave pool, and a glimpse of local marine life, all et between lush mountains and the South China sea. Tickets are available at https://waterworld.oceanpark.com.hk/en/ .

Give the South African winter chill a skip this year and head to Hong Kong for a summer holiday you will never forget.
