This September, South African cinema audiences will witness a world-first: the stage adaptation of Stanley Kubrick’s cult classic Dr. Strangelove, filmed live in London and screened exclusively at select Ster-Kinekor and Cinema Nouveau theatres as part of the NT Live series.

📅 Screening Dates: 20, 21 & 23 September 2025
📍 Cinemas: Ster-Kinekor Rosebank Nouveau & Cresta (Johannesburg), Ster-Kinekor Brooklyn (Pretoria), Ster-Kinekor V&A Waterfront (Cape Town)

🎭 A Cold War Comedy Reimagined

Widely regarded as one of the greatest comedies of all time, Dr. Strangelove first hit cinemas in 1964 as Stanley Kubrick’s satirical masterpiece on nuclear politics. Now, for the first time in history, it comes alive on stage — and South Africans will see it on the big screen, captured in high definition by National Theatre Live (NT Live).

This world-premiere adaptation is led by an award-winning creative team:

  • Steve Coogan (Alan Partridge, The Trip) – in a tour de force performance, playing four iconic roles originally made famous by Peter Sellers.

  • Armando Iannucci (The Thick of It, Veep) – Emmy Award-winning satirist and co-creator of the adaptation.

  • Sean Foley (The Upstart Crow) – Olivier Award-winning director bringing Kubrick’s absurdist comedy into the theatre.

  • Supporting cast includes Giles Terera (Hamilton, Othello) and Tony Jayawardena (Nye).

🔥 The Story

When a rogue U.S. general triggers a nuclear attack on the Soviet Union, the world teeters on the brink of destruction. In a surreal and hysterical scramble, government leaders, military commanders, and one eccentric scientist must find a way to stop global annihilation.

Six decades later, Kubrick’s satire feels just as urgent — a razor-sharp critique of politics, power, and paranoia that speaks directly to today’s uncertain world.

🎥 Why This Production Matters

  • It marks the first-ever stage adaptation of Dr. Strangelove.

  • Seven-time BAFTA-winner Steve Coogan delivers a must-see performance across multiple characters.

  • It’s a rare chance for South Africans to watch a brand-new London production on the big screen, without flying overseas.

  • The creative team includes some of the biggest names in global theatre and comedy.
