If you’re a young professional just setting out on your career, you might not be able to afford the most expensive flagship smartphones on the market. But if you’re an entrepreneur or employed by a company with a bring your own device policy, you’ll want to find a reliable, stylish, hardworking device that helps you to get stuff done.

The good news is that there are many affordable Android smartphones on the market that offer a great balance of attractive styling and high performance.

Jace Chen, realme Country Manager highlights the specifications and features that will help you to be productive at work when you’re on a budget.

Performance and processing power: For business use, you’ll want a device that can deliver nappy performance across the apps you use every day. Modern platforms like the MediaTek Dimensity 7050 power smartphones that are fast, responsive and power-efficient, but also budget-friendly. You’ll also want to device with adequate RAM to support smooth multitasking. Also ensure ample internal storage (at least 128GB) to store documents, applications, and media.

Battery life and fast charging: Look for a smartphone with a large battery capacity (at least 5 000mAh or higher) to ensure it lasts through a full workday without needing frequent recharges. Fast charging that allows you to fully recharge your device in less than an hour, is becoming more common on mid-range phones, and is a must for business users.

5G connectivity: Consider futureproofing your smartphone investment by looking for a device that supports 5G in addition to 4G and Wi-Fi. 5G is becoming increasingly widely available in South Africa and the speed boost is welcomed when working with cloud-based applications or downloading big files.

Durability: A smartphone with a robust build, preferably with water and dust resistance, will be a reliable companion for years to come. A device with an IP54 Dust & Water Resistance Rating and drop protection should hold up well in everyday usage.

Camera quality: Camera quality isn’t just about selfies and social media photos. A good camera can also be beneficial for scanning documents and videoconferencing.

Biometric authentication: Fingerprint sensors for quick and secure access can enhance your security and end-user experience. Rapid biometric authentication allows you to unlock your phone in milliseconds without needing to input a code or PIN.

Display quality: If you’re spending a lot of time on the road, you’ll do a lot of work on your smartphone. A high-resolution display (Full HD or higher) will offer clear and crisp document and image display, making it easier on your eyes to go through a spreadsheet or presentation.
