South African Men Face a Silent Health Crisis

Could Rooibos Offer Part of the Solution?

Across South Africa, a growing number of men are navigating an increasingly demanding reality.

Long working hours. Financial pressures. Shift work. Sleep deprivation. Constant stress.

While these challenges may seem like ordinary features of modern life, health experts warn that they are contributing to a far more serious issue unfolding quietly beneath the surface – a rising burden of non-communicable diseases that continue to impact the health and well-being of South African men.

As cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic stress and poor sleep become increasingly common, researchers are turning their attention to practical, accessible lifestyle interventions that could help support long-term health.

One unlikely contender is already sitting in millions of South African kitchens.

Rooibos.

Long celebrated as a cultural staple and beloved caffeine-free beverage, Rooibos is now attracting growing scientific interest for its potential role in supporting cardiometabolic health, stress resilience and sleep quality.

The Growing Health Challenge Facing South African Men

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death among non-communicable diseases globally and continues to pose a significant health challenge for South African men.

At the same time, diabetes prevalence is rising rapidly, particularly among men aged 40 years and older.

Researchers are also increasingly recognising the impact of chronic stress and sleep deprivation as major contributors to long-term disease risk.

This is particularly relevant for shift workers employed in sectors such as healthcare, transport, mining and security, where irregular schedules can disrupt normal sleep cycles and place additional strain on the body.

“Men are under sustained physiological stress, often without recognising the long-term impact,” says Prof Gerald Maarman, a health sciences researcher at Stellenbosch University.

“We are seeing growing interest in everyday, accessible interventions that may help support the body’s natural resilience systems.”

Why Scientists Are Paying Attention to Rooibos

Rooibos (Aspalathus linearis) is unique among herbal infusions.

Naturally caffeine-free, it contains a rich profile of polyphenols, including aspalathin and nothofagin, compounds that have been widely studied for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

These naturally occurring compounds are increasingly attracting attention from researchers investigating how dietary choices may support overall health and well-being.

A systematic review published in Beverages in 2024 found that Rooibos contains bioactive compounds with strong antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-hyperglycaemic properties, drawing on evidence from both human and experimental studies.

Researchers from South African institutions, including Stellenbosch University and Cape Peninsula University of Technology, have also explored Rooibos’ potential influence on oxidative stress and inflammation.

Their findings suggest that Rooibos consumption may help support the body’s antioxidant defence systems while reducing biomarkers associated with cellular stress.

“While Rooibos is not a medicine, the science is increasingly showing that it contains compounds that can support the body’s ability to manage oxidative stress and inflammation,” says Prof Maarman.

“These are key biological processes linked to heart disease, diabetes and fatigue.”

The Hidden Link Between Stress and Sleep

For many men, stress and sleep deprivation form a cycle that can be difficult to break.

Persistent stress often leads to poor sleep, while inadequate sleep can further increase physiological stress levels, creating a pattern that may negatively affect long-term health.

Although Rooibos does not directly treat stress hormones, its caffeine-free nature may provide a practical advantage.

Unlike coffee and traditional black tea, Rooibos does not stimulate the central nervous system, making it suitable for consumption later in the day without contributing to caffeine-related sleep disruption.

This may be particularly beneficial for individuals working irregular hours or struggling with sleep quality.

“Many men underestimate the impact of caffeine timing on sleep quality,” explains Prof Maarman.

“Switching to Rooibos in the afternoon or evening can be a simple behavioural change that supports relaxation and recovery.”

Supporting Heart and Metabolic Health

Inflammation is increasingly recognised as a major driver of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes.

Research published in peer-reviewed journals, including the Journal of Ethnopharmacology, has explored Rooibos’ potential cardioprotective properties.

Studies have investigated links between Rooibos consumption and improvements in oxidative stress markers, vascular function and lipid profiles.

While scientists emphasise that human research continues to evolve, existing findings consistently point to Rooibos as a potentially supportive component of a healthy lifestyle.

Importantly, researchers stress that Rooibos should not be viewed as a substitute for medical treatment or professional healthcare guidance.

Instead, its value lies in its potential contribution as part of a broader wellness strategy that includes balanced nutrition, physical activity, quality sleep and routine health monitoring.

A Proudly South African Wellness Tradition

For generations, Rooibos has been woven into the fabric of South African life.

Served in homes across the country, it has long been appreciated for its distinctive flavour, versatility and naturally caffeine-free profile.

What is changing now is the growing body of scientific research exploring the biological mechanisms that may help explain why so many people continue to include Rooibos in their daily routines.

As global interest in functional foods and natural wellness solutions continues to expand, Rooibos is increasingly earning recognition as both a cultural treasure and a scientifically intriguing beverage.

“For generations, Rooibos has been part of South African daily life,” says Prof Maarman.

“What is exciting now is the growing scientific validation of what people have long experienced – its potential to support well-being in a natural, accessible way.”

While there are no shortcuts to good health, experts believe that small, sustainable lifestyle choices can make a meaningful difference over time.

“Small, consistent changes often deliver the most sustainable health benefits,” says Prof Maarman.

“Rooibos is not a quick fix, but it can be a meaningful part of a broader wellness routine.”

As South African men continue to navigate the pressures of modern life, that simple cup of Rooibos may represent more than a comforting daily ritual. It may also be part of a growing conversation about resilience, prevention and the everyday choices that support better health.
