Sony has expanded its Alpha™ E-mount lens portfolio with the introduction of the FE 100-400mm F5.6-8 OSS, a new super-telephoto zoom lens designed to make long-range photography more accessible for hobbyists and photography enthusiasts.
Announced on 5 August 2026, the latest addition to Sony’s full-frame mirrorless ecosystem combines a 100mm to 400mm zoom range, lightweight construction and advanced optical technology in a compact package that weighs just approximately 654 grams. The result is a lens built for photographers who want to capture distant subjects without carrying the bulk typically associated with super-telephoto equipment.
Bringing distant moments within reach
Whether photographing birds in flight, sporting action, trains, aircraft or sweeping landscapes, the FE 100-400mm F5.6-8 OSS is designed to help users get closer to subjects that are otherwise out of reach.
Despite offering an impressive 400mm focal length, Sony has engineered the lens to remain compact and easy to handle, making it particularly appealing to photographers stepping into super-telephoto photography for the first time.
Its lightweight design also supports comfortable handheld shooting, allowing users to react quickly when capturing fast-moving subjects or framing spontaneous moments outdoors.
For photographers seeking even greater reach, the lens is compatible with an optional teleconverter, extending focal lengths to 800mm, or up to 1,200mm when used in APS-C mode.
Sharp performance throughout the zoom range
Sony has equipped the lens with an advanced optical design featuring two Extra-low Dispersion (ED) glass elements and two aspherical elements.
These components work together to minimise chromatic and optical aberrations, ensuring clear, detailed images across the entire zoom range.
The lens also features a 9-blade circular aperture, helping create smooth, natural-looking background blur that allows subjects to stand out while maintaining pleasing bokeh.
Its versatility extends beyond distant photography.
With a minimum focusing distance of 0.86 metres at the telephoto end and 1.13 metres at the wide end, along with a maximum magnification of 0.41x, photographers can also capture close-up images of flowers, insects and other nearby subjects.
Built to keep up with the action
Capturing fast-moving subjects requires speed as well as precision, and Sony has designed the FE 100-400mm F5.6-8 OSS with that in mind.
The lens features a linear motor autofocus system that delivers fast, accurate and quiet focusing performance, making it suitable for wildlife, aviation and sports photography.
When paired with the Sony α9 III, the lens supports high-speed continuous shooting with AF/AE tracking at up to approximately 120 frames per second, helping photographers capture decisive moments with confidence.
To improve handheld performance, Sony has also integrated Optical SteadyShot (OSS) image stabilisation, reducing the effects of camera shake when shooting at longer focal lengths.
The lens additionally supports Active Mode image stabilisation, coordinated image stabilisation control, and breathing compensation on compatible Sony camera bodies, helping deliver stable stills and smoother video footage.
Designed for outdoor photography
Recognising that many photographers shoot in changing outdoor conditions, Sony has incorporated several practical features to improve usability in the field.
The FE 100-400mm F5.6-8 OSS includes:
- A customisable Focus Hold button
- Focus mode and focus range switches
- A Zoom Lock switch
- A supplied lens hood to reduce flare and ghosting
- A dust and moisture-resistant design for added confidence when shooting outdoors
Together, these features provide greater control while helping photographers continue shooting even when weather conditions become less predictable.
Availability in South Africa
The Sony FE 100-400mm F5.6-8 OSS will be available in South Africa from the end of September 2026 with a recommended retail price of R17,999.
Designed for photographers looking to explore wildlife, sports, travel and nature photography without the weight of traditional super-telephoto lenses, Sony’s latest release delivers an appealing combination of portability, optical performance and versatility.
