Johannesburg came alive with music, culture and connection on Saturday, 1 August, as thousands of music lovers gathered at Huddle Park for the inaugural Scatterlings Music Festival.

The debut festival brought together some of South Africa’s most celebrated artists for a day-long celebration of music and heritage. It also marked a significant new chapter for the Scatterlings project, following the release of the album just one day earlier.

A new chapter for a timeless sound

Released on Friday, 31 July, the Scatterlings album is a collaborative project curated by Jesse Clegg and Msaki.

The project brings together some of South Africa’s most celebrated musicians to reimagine the iconic songs of Johnny Clegg for a new generation.

The festival took that idea from the recording studio to the stage.

Fans experienced live performances of reimagined songs from the album, while artists also performed music from their own catalogues. The result was a broad celebration of South African music that brought different generations and musical styles together.

An all-star South African line-up

The festival featured an impressive collection of local talent.

The line-up included Zakes Bantwini, Sjava, Sun-El Musician, TRESOR, Msaki, Jesse Clegg, J’Something, MUZI, Simmy, Beatenberg, Sminofu and Zolani Mahola, among others.

Each artist brought their own energy and identity to the festival.

Together, their performances created a constantly shifting musical experience. Audiences moved between emotional moments, energetic performances and familiar songs that have become part of South Africa’s musical landscape.

It was not simply about revisiting the past.

It was about showing how influential music can evolve when a new generation of artists brings its own voice to it.

Johnny Clegg’s music finds a new audience

At the heart of the weekend was the Scatterlings album.

The project gives contemporary artists the opportunity to reinterpret songs associated with Johnny Clegg while introducing those songs to modern audiences through fresh arrangements and different musical perspectives.

That made the timing of the festival particularly significant.

The album arrived just one day before the festival, giving fans the opportunity to experience the project in both recorded and live form almost immediately.

The performances also highlighted the enduring ability of music to connect people across generations.

More than a music festival

Throughout the day, the spirit of Scatterlings extended beyond the performances.

The festival brought artists and audiences together through music, storytelling and shared experiences, creating an atmosphere built around connection.

From singalongs to high-energy performances, the event reflected the diversity and creativity of South Africa’s music industry.

Established artists and contemporary stars shared the same stage, creating a rare collaborative environment that showcased the depth of local talent.

That combination gave the inaugural festival an identity of its own.

A strong first chapter

The response from the crowd marked an encouraging beginning for Scatterlings Music Festival.

Thousands of fans attended the first edition, while the album provided a soundtrack that connected the live experience to a broader celebration of South African musical heritage.

The response also points to the potential for Scatterlings to become more than a once-off project.

The inaugural festival has positioned itself as a new live music experience centred on collaboration, creativity and the unifying power of music.

For a country with such a rich and diverse musical history, the idea feels particularly fitting.

Scatterlings looks backwards to honour music that helped shape generations, while simultaneously looking forward through the artists giving those songs a fresh identity.

A celebration that brought generations together

The first Scatterlings Music Festival ultimately delivered on a simple but powerful idea: music can connect people.

At Huddle Park, thousands of fans gathered to celebrate familiar songs, discover new interpretations and experience some of South Africa’s biggest musical names in one place.

Following the release of the album and the success of its inaugural live event, Scatterlings has opened its first chapter with a clear message — South African music continues to evolve, but its power to bring people together remains timeless.
