A wildlife sighting across the bush, a winning goal, the final glow of a sunset over Table Mountain or a favourite artist commanding the stage. Some moments happen once. The new HUAWEI Pura 90s Series is designed to make sure South Africans can capture them in extraordinary detail — and share them faster.
Launched at Vodacom World Connect 500 in Johannesburg on 6 August 2026, the HUAWEI Pura 90s Series combines advanced smartphone photography, AI-powered imaging, refined design and the return of 5G connectivity to Huawei flagship smartphones in South Africa.
At the centre of the new range is a major photography upgrade: the HUAWEI Pura 90s Pro Max features a 200MP Ultra Large Sensor Telephoto Camera, giving users a powerful tool for capturing distant subjects.
Huawei says the series is built around its philosophy of “Now is Your Moment”, with a focus on helping users capture and share the experiences that matter most.
200MP telephoto photography takes centre stage
The standout feature of the HUAWEI Pura 90s Pro Max is its 200MP Ultra Large Sensor Telephoto Camera.
The system is designed for scenarios where getting physically closer is not an option. Wildlife, sports and live performances are among the situations where the telephoto camera can help users capture distant subjects with detail and clarity.
The camera system also incorporates chip-level 200MP RAW real-time processing technology, supporting up to 20x telephoto video recording.
For handheld shooting, CIPA 7.0 image stabilisation is designed to reduce camera shake and help deliver steadier images and video.
Huawei has also introduced True-to-Colour Camera 2.0, which the company says improves colour accuracy by 43% and delivers a 34% wider colour gamut.
The result is intended to reproduce scenes with vibrant, true-to-life colours, from sunsets and city landscapes to everyday family moments.
AI puts more control in the camera
Photography on the Pura 90s Series is not only about hardware.
Huawei has introduced a collection of intelligent photography tools designed to make image creation easier.
AI Composition works as a real-time photography assistant. It recognises subjects such as portraits, landscapes and architecture and provides framing guidance.
AI De-glare is designed to remove unwanted reflections from surfaces such as windows, glass and displays while retaining natural skin tones and fine detail.
Then there is AI Move, which allows users to reposition or duplicate subjects in an image while reconstructing backgrounds and matching lighting for more natural-looking results.
Together, these tools give users more creative control without requiring advanced photography skills.
A flagship designed to stand out
Huawei has also placed significant emphasis on the physical design of the new series.
The Pura 90s range follows Huawei’s Rhythm of Colour design philosophy, with a flat-edged design inspired by changing light, landscapes and everyday experiences.
The HUAWEI Pura 90s Pro Max comes in Blush Gold, Blaze Purple and Graphite Black.
The HUAWEI Pura 90s Pro is available in Orange Soda, Coconut White and Mulberry Black.
The colour choices give the two models distinctly different personalities while maintaining the overall design language of the series.
Built for life beyond the camera
Huawei has positioned the Pura 90s Series as more than a photography-focused smartphone.
The Pura 90s Pro Max features Anti-Reflection and Scratch-resistant Kunlun Glass, which Huawei says can reduce screen reflections by up to 70%.
The technology is designed to improve outdoor visibility while also providing enhanced scratch resistance and helping reduce fingerprint smudges.
The series also introduces Huawei’s latest system-level AI assistant, Celia, designed to provide more intuitive everyday interactions and help users complete common tasks more efficiently.
Battery life is another major part of the package.
Both models feature a 6000mAh battery. The Pura 90s Pro supports 66W HUAWEI SuperCharge, while the Pura 90s Pro Max supports 100W HUAWEI SuperCharge.
5G makes its Huawei flagship return
Perhaps one of the biggest connectivity developments is the return of 5G to Huawei flagship smartphones in South Africa.
The Pura 90s Series combines Huawei’s communications technology with 5G connectivity to support faster upload and download speeds, stronger signal performance and a smoother mobile experience where 5G coverage is available.
For users, that means activities such as streaming high-definition content, joining video calls, navigating on the move and uploading high-resolution photographs and videos can be handled with greater speed.
It also complements the phone’s photography focus.
Capture with the Pura 90s Series’ Master Zoom, then share with the speed of 5G.
Two Pro models, one photography-first vision
The new range gives South African consumers two flagship options.
The HUAWEI Pura 90s Pro Max leads the line-up with its 200MP Ultra Large Sensor Telephoto Camera, advanced stabilisation, 20x telephoto video capabilities and 100W charging.
The HUAWEI Pura 90s Pro brings the same broader Pura 90s philosophy while offering a different balance of features, design and charging capability with 66W HUAWEI SuperCharge.
Both are built around Huawei’s push to make advanced photography, AI and connectivity part of everyday smartphone experiences.
“Now is Your Moment”
For Huawei, the launch is about more than adding another smartphone to the market.
Jerry Wang, Vice President of Huawei Consumer Business Group South Africa, said the Pura 90s Series was created around the way South Africans capture and share meaningful experiences.
The launch also represents an important milestone for Huawei locally, according to Wang, with the company highlighting both its advanced flagship camera system and the return of 5G connectivity to its flagship smartphone portfolio.
The message is simple: capture the moment, then share it faster.
Whether that moment happens in the middle of a South African landscape, at a sporting event, at a concert or during an ordinary day with family and friends, Huawei wants the Pura 90s Series to put the tools for capturing it in users’ hands.
HUAWEI Pura 90s Series: South African pricing and availability
The HUAWEI Pura 90s Series is now available in South Africa through select retailers, Huawei Experience Stores, operators and the Huawei Online Store.
Pricing starts from R19,999, or from R849 per month over 36 months.
With a 200MP Ultra Large Sensor Telephoto Camera, AI-powered photography tools, a 6000mAh battery and the return of 5G to Huawei’s flagship smartphone range in South Africa, the Pura 90s Series is making a clear play for consumers who want their smartphone to do more than simply document life.
Because sometimes the moment you want to remember is the moment you cannot afford to miss.
Now is your moment.
