A tennis legend is swapping the baseline for the fairways.
Three-time singles Grand Slam champion and former World No. 1 Ash Barty has been confirmed as the latest addition to Team World for the inaugural Icons Cup South Africa, bringing another major sporting name to an already star-studded showdown at The Links at Fancourt in George.
The announcement, made during Women’s Month in South Africa, sees Barty join Team World captain José María Olazábal as the team prepares to face Ernie Els’ Team South Africa from 11 to 13 December 2026.
And Barty will not simply be making up the numbers.
Playing off an impressive 2 handicap, the former tennis champion is set to compete against the men in three days of high-stakes match-play golf.
From Grand Slam glory to the golf course
Barty is no stranger to elite competition.
During her remarkable tennis career, she captured the French Open, Wimbledon and Australian Open titles before retiring from professional tennis while ranked No. 1 in the world.
Her sporting ability, however, extends well beyond tennis.
Barty has already demonstrated her ability to compete in the Icons Series, delivering a strong winning record during her appearance at Icons Cup New York in 2022.
Now, she returns to the series with a 2 handicap and the opportunity to test herself against some of the biggest names in international sport.
Her competitive composure, sharp short game and experience performing under pressure could make her a valuable addition to Olazábal’s side.
Barty joins a growing Team World
The Australian sporting icon joins confirmed Team World players John Terry and Brian Lara, with the squad continuing to take shape ahead of December’s competition.
Team World is ultimately expected to feature 14 players, while the event will bring together 28 world-class athletes from different sporting disciplines.
The concept is simple but compelling: take elite athletes out of their traditional sporting environments and put them together on the golf course.
The result promises to be a unique sporting spectacle where experience from football, cricket, tennis and other disciplines meets the demands of competitive match-play golf.
South Africa prepares for a heavyweight showdown
Waiting for Team World will be Team South Africa, led by golf legend Ernie Els.
The home side already features an impressive collection of sporting talent, including former Proteas and South African sporting stars AB de Villiers, Fourie du Preez, Butch James and Vernon Philander.
With more names still to be revealed by both captains, the line-ups are expected to continue developing in the coming weeks.

Three days of sporting drama at Fancourt
The Icons Cup South Africa will take place at The Links at Fancourt in George, described in the announcement as South Africa’s top-ranked course.
Over three days, the 28 athletes will compete in team match-play golf, with the event set to combine sporting rivalries with an opportunity for fans to see some of the world’s most recognisable athletes competing outside their usual arenas.
The event will also be broadcast live globally to more than 150 countries, bringing the competition to an international audience.
But for those attending in person, the attraction is even closer access to the action, with the event promising an inside-the-ropes experience featuring sporting personalities, competition and unscripted moments.
Ash Barty adds another layer to the rivalry
Barty’s inclusion gives Team World another athlete with both elite sporting pedigree and proven Icons Series experience.
Her transition from tennis champion to competitive golfer also adds an intriguing dimension to the contest.
She knows what it takes to perform when the pressure rises. She knows what it means to compete against the world’s best. And with a 2 handicap, she arrives with a serious golfing game of her own.
Now, the question is whether Barty and her Team World teammates can overcome Ernie Els’ South African side on home soil.
