The future of mobility is no longer a distant concept for South African motorists.

As fuel efficiency, sustainability and smarter technology become increasingly important considerations for car buyers, automakers are racing to deliver solutions that balance innovation with practicality. Now, one of the world’s fastest-growing new energy vehicle manufacturers is expanding its local offering with a vehicle designed to make electrified driving more accessible than ever before.

BYD Auto South Africa has officially unveiled the all-new BYD ATTO 2 DM-i, a compact SUV that introduces the company’s latest plug-in hybrid technology to one of the country’s most competitive automotive segments.

Blending electric efficiency with the convenience and flexibility of a traditional petrol-powered vehicle, the ATTO 2 DM-i represents another significant step in BYD’s mission to bring smarter and more sustainable mobility solutions to South African consumers.

Designed for Everyday South African Driving

For many motorists interested in electric mobility, concerns around charging infrastructure, driving range and practicality often remain barriers to adoption.

The ATTO 2 DM-i has been engineered to address those concerns directly.

At its core is BYD’s latest-generation DM-i Super Hybrid system, which combines a highly efficient petrol engine with an electric motor to deliver a smooth, responsive and economical driving experience.

The result is a compact SUV capable of offering impressive fuel efficiency while maintaining the flexibility needed for both daily commuting and longer road trips.

Whether navigating city traffic during the week or heading out on a weekend getaway, the vehicle is designed to fit seamlessly into modern lifestyles.

The Technology Behind the Innovation

One of the standout features of the ATTO 2 DM-i is BYD’s renowned Blade Battery technology.

Widely recognised for its safety and durability, the Blade Battery has become one of BYD’s defining innovations and continues to set industry benchmarks within the new energy vehicle sector.

Combined with the DM-i Super Hybrid powertrain, the technology contributes to a combined driving range of up to 930 kilometres, providing motorists with the confidence to travel longer distances without sacrificing efficiency.

The vehicle also incorporates a range of intelligent technologies designed to enhance convenience, connectivity and overall driving enjoyment.

Among the standard features available across the range are:

  • Wireless Apple CarPlay
  • Wireless Android Auto
  • Keyless entry and start
  • Panoramic sunroof
  • Rotating touchscreen infotainment display
  • Advanced safety technologies
  • Intelligent driver-assistance systems

Together, these features position the ATTO 2 DM-i as a technologically advanced option within the compact SUV category.

Two Models, One Electrified Vision

South African buyers will be able to choose between two derivatives.

The ATTO 2 DM-i Comfort serves as the entry point into the range, while the ATTO 2 DM-i Dynamic offers additional premium features for customers seeking a more luxurious ownership experience.

Both models benefit from BYD’s advanced hybrid technology, Blade Battery system and comprehensive safety package.

The Dynamic derivative further enhances the offering with:

  • Premium PU seating
  • 50W wireless phone charger
  • Electric driver’s seat adjustment
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • 360-degree camera system
  • Front parking radars
  • Intelligent driving assistance technologies
  • Electric-folding exterior mirrors

These additions are aimed at motorists looking for elevated comfort, convenience and connectivity without stepping into significantly larger vehicle categories.

A Strategic Move for South Africa

According to Steve Chang, Managing Director of BYD Auto South Africa, the launch reflects the company’s long-term commitment to the local market and its vision of accelerating the adoption of smarter mobility solutions.

“The introduction of the ATTO 2 DM-i is another significant step in BYD’s mission to accelerate the transition towards smarter and more sustainable mobility in South Africa,” says Chang.

“We understand that many consumers are interested in electrified vehicles but are looking for a solution that fits seamlessly into their daily lives.”

Chang believes the combination of efficiency, advanced technology, safety and practicality positions the ATTO 2 DM-i as one of the strongest contenders in the compact SUV segment.

“The ATTO 2 DM-i delivers exactly that, combining exceptional fuel efficiency, advanced technology, outstanding safety and practical everyday usability in a package that is both attainable and exciting. We believe it will become one of the most compelling offerings in the compact SUV segment.”

Expanding Access to Electrified Mobility

For BYD Auto South Africa, the ATTO 2 DM-i is about more than simply introducing another vehicle.

It is about broadening access to electrified mobility.

The compact SUV has been strategically positioned to appeal to first-time new energy vehicle buyers, young professionals, growing families and motorists seeking lower running costs without sacrificing comfort, technology or performance.

According to Nomonde Kweyi, Marketing Director for BYD Auto South Africa, the vehicle reflects the growing interest South Africans have shown in the brand’s expanding local portfolio.

“South Africans have embraced BYD’s growing range of vehicles, and we are excited to continue building on that momentum,” says Kweyi.

“The ATTO 2 DM-i introduces a new audience to the benefits of electrified mobility while addressing the realities of everyday South African driving. It offers customers a smart, stylish and practical SUV that fits both their lifestyle and their budget.”

Pricing and Availability

The all-new BYD ATTO 2 DM-i is available through BYD dealerships nationwide from June 2026.

Pricing starts at:

  • BYD ATTO 2 DM-i Comfort – R449,900
  • BYD ATTO 2 DM-i Dynamic – R489,900

As South Africa’s automotive market gradually embraces new energy vehicles, BYD continues to strengthen its local presence by offering consumers more choice and greater access to advanced mobility technologies.

With the arrival of the ATTO 2 DM-i, the company adds another compelling option to a segment where practicality, efficiency and affordability remain key purchasing considerations.

For motorists looking to take their first step into electrified driving without sacrificing convenience, the future may have just become a little more accessible.
