Strategic partnership aims to equip young South Africans with future-ready technology skills and bridge the country's growing digital skills gap

South Africa’s digital economy continues to grow at an unprecedented pace, yet a critical challenge remains: finding enough skilled young professionals to fill the thousands of technology jobs available across the country.

Against this backdrop, Samsung South Africa has taken a significant step toward addressing the challenge by officially signing a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the Durban University of Technology (DUT) to launch the Samsung Innovation Campus (SIC) programme. The initiative is designed to equip young people with the future-ready skills needed to thrive in the rapidly evolving digital economy.

The agreement marks the beginning of a strategic partnership between Samsung, DUT and government stakeholders that seeks to transform education into a powerful driver of employability, entrepreneurship and innovation.

A Partnership Focused on South Africa’s Future

The MOA signing ceremony and official launch of the Samsung Innovation Campus programme recently took place at Coastlands Musgrave Hotel in Durban.

The event brought together leaders from academia, government and industry, including representatives from Samsung’s Public Affairs team, Durban University of Technology leadership, and Nhlakanipho Nkontwana, Head of Department for the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (EDTEA).

At its core, the partnership is built around a simple but urgent objective: preparing South Africa’s youth for the opportunities and demands of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR).

As industries increasingly embrace artificial intelligence, automation, data analytics and digital transformation, the need for skilled technology professionals has never been greater.

The Skills Gap South Africa Can No Longer Ignore

Recent statistics reveal the scale of the challenge.

According to Statistics South Africa, youth unemployment remains above 46% among individuals aged 15 to 34.

At the same time, the technology sector faces a very different problem.

Research from the 2024/2025 Decoding ICT Demand report conducted by The Collective X found that more than 118,000 ICT and digital positions remain vacant across South Africa, including thousands of entry-level opportunities suitable for young graduates and first-time job seekers.

The contrast is striking.

While millions of young people are searching for work, employers are struggling to find candidates with the skills needed to fill critical technology roles.

The Samsung Innovation Campus programme has been specifically designed to help close that gap.

Building the Next Generation of Digital Talent

Hosted within the DUT Business School, the programme aims to upskill 60 young people in some of the most sought-after technology disciplines in the modern economy.

Participants will receive training in coding and programming using Python, as well as artificial intelligence technologies that are increasingly shaping industries across the globe.

However, the programme’s ambitions extend beyond employability alone.

The initiative is also designed to encourage entrepreneurship by enabling participants to develop AI-driven projects, build innovative solutions and tackle real-world challenges through technology.

In a country where entrepreneurship is increasingly viewed as a critical driver of economic growth and job creation, this focus could prove transformative.

More Than Technical Skills

While technical knowledge forms the foundation of the programme, Samsung and DUT recognise that success in the modern workplace requires more than coding expertise.

The DUT curriculum integrated into the Samsung Innovation Campus also focuses on developing essential soft skills, including:

  • Communication
  • Critical thinking
  • Problem-solving
  • Team collaboration
  • Adaptability

These competencies are increasingly valued by employers and play a crucial role in helping graduates navigate complex work environments and changing industry demands.

The goal is to produce well-rounded professionals capable of contributing meaningfully to organisations while also possessing the confidence and creativity to build their own ventures.

Investing in South Africa’s Digital Economy

Speaking at the launch, Samsung South Africa CSR Manager Lefa Makgato highlighted the company’s long-term commitment to the initiative.

Over the next three years, Samsung will invest significantly each year to support the programme and ensure its sustainability.

For Samsung, the initiative represents more than a training programme.

It is an investment in South Africa’s future digital economy.

Makgato explained that the collaboration is founded on the belief that education, technology and strategic partnerships are essential to building a more inclusive and prosperous society.

She also emphasised the importance of bridging the gap between academic learning and industry requirements, ensuring graduates leave with practical, market-relevant skills that improve their employment prospects.

The programme’s objectives align closely with South Africa’s National Development Plan 2030, which prioritises skills development, digital literacy and job creation as key drivers of economic growth.

DUT’s Vision for Future-Ready Graduates

For Durban University of Technology, the partnership reinforces its commitment to producing graduates equipped for the realities of a rapidly changing world.

Professor Pfano Mashau, Director of the DUT Business School, highlighted the university’s responsibility to ensure students develop skills that improve their employability and long-term success.

He expressed appreciation for Samsung’s investment and noted that the programme provides an opportunity for graduates to gain in-demand capabilities that could help them launch businesses, create jobs and contribute to economic development in KwaZulu-Natal and beyond.

As the Fourth Industrial Revolution continues to reshape industries and societies, universities increasingly face pressure to ensure graduates possess both technical expertise and practical workplace skills.

The Samsung Innovation Campus is designed to support exactly that mission.

Public-Private Collaboration Driving Change

The launch also demonstrates the growing importance of public-private partnerships in tackling some of South Africa’s most pressing socio-economic challenges.

Government, academia and industry each bring unique strengths to the table.

Together, they can create pathways that connect education with employment opportunities while fostering innovation and economic inclusion.

Nhlakanipho Nkontwana described the initiative as more than a ceremonial launch.

Instead, he characterised it as an opportunity to reimagine education in an era defined by rapid technological advancement and the rise of artificial intelligence.

He noted that partnerships between educational institutions and industry leaders are becoming increasingly important in ensuring students gain exposure to cutting-edge technologies while developing the practical skills required to participate meaningfully in the digital economy.

Creating Tomorrow’s Innovators

Beyond employment statistics and technology training, the Samsung Innovation Campus carries a broader ambition.

The programme seeks to nurture a generation of innovators, entrepreneurs and problem-solvers capable of using technology to address challenges facing communities, businesses and society.

Participants are not simply recipients of training.

They are future leaders who may help shape how technology is used to improve lives, create opportunities and drive economic growth.

At a time when South Africa is searching for sustainable solutions to youth unemployment and skills shortages, initiatives like the Samsung Innovation Campus demonstrate how strategic partnerships can create meaningful pathways to opportunity.

The collaboration between Samsung, DUT and government stakeholders offers a glimpse into what the future of education and workforce development could look like: practical, technology-driven, industry-aligned and focused on empowering young people to succeed in a rapidly evolving world.

As South Africa’s digital transformation accelerates, programmes like SIC may prove essential in ensuring the country’s youth are not left behind—but are instead equipped to lead the future.
