The Cape Mint™, Sub-Saharan Africa’s oldest private mint, in collaboration with the South African Rugby Union, today unveiled the new design of the official Springbok Rugby Sevens medallion. The launch of the commemorative pieces comes just weeks before the Rugby 7’s tournament kicks off in Cape Town, the first time the tournament will be hosted in Africa.

The limited-edition medallion is an official licensed product of the Springbok Sevens that pays tribute to an enduring rugby tradition and a revered national pastime. Available in proof quality fine silver and bronze, the front side of the medal features a leaping Springbok, the iconic symbol of South Africa’s national rugby team. The other side depicts a map of South Africa and a relief of the Table Mountain, the country’s best-known landmark and a protected UNESCO World Heritage Site.

“We are excited to reveal our new design of the official Springbok Sevens medallion just in time for the upcoming Rugby World Cup Sevens,” commented Natanya Van Niekerk, award-winning numismatist and Director at The Cape Mint. “They offer a proud expression of support for the current world champion’s indomitable spirit and talent, coinciding with the first time this popular sporting event will be held on the continent.”

The silver proof medallion is 99.9% pure silver (99.9 AG) and weighs 1 ounce. Both versions measure 38.6 mm in diameter and arrive in a crystal-clear capsule for enduring protection. The longstanding licensee of the country’s national rugby team is also relaunching its widely popular Springbok lapel pin in time for the 2022 Rugby World Cup Sevens, where forty teams will compete for world champion status over three days commencing 9 September 2022.

This is The Cape Mint’s third series of the Springbok Sevens official medallion, having earlier released the British and Irish Lions Tour of South Africa as well as the ‘Invictus’ series. The latter commemorates the 2019 Rugby World Cup with a medal featuring the Springboks’ Captain. To acquire any of these commemorative medallions, visit www.thecapemint.com
