Pretoria got a different kind of fitness experience on Friday, 28 August, as Menlyn Park Shopping Centre partnered with uRun+ for the second edition of the uRun+ Maze Run.

With 1,000 participants taking on a maze-style course, the event brought together running, strategy, teamwork, music, lights and entertainment in an experience designed to take fitness beyond the traditional race format.

Held at Menlyn Park, the Maze Run offered participants a choice between 2.5 km and 5 km race formats, creating an opportunity for people across different fitness levels to get involved.

But this was no ordinary run.

Where running meets strategy

The uRun+ Maze Run challenged participants to do more than simply put one foot in front of the other.

The unique maze-style course combined endurance, speed, teamwork and strategy, giving participants a different way to approach a running event.

The format also helped make the experience more social and accessible. Competitive runners could push themselves, while fitness enthusiasts had the opportunity to participate at their own level.

The result was an event that turned the act of running into a broader experience.

A race with a festival atmosphere

The energy continued beyond the course.

The Menlyn Park parking area was transformed into a festival-like environment, with music, lights and entertainment adding to the excitement surrounding the race.

That atmosphere also meant the event was not only about those taking part.

Friends, families and spectators could enjoy the experience while participants tackled the maze, creating a shared environment around fitness and entertainment.

The combination reflects an evolving approach to fitness events, where participation can be as much about connection and enjoyment as it is about the physical challenge.

Menlyn Park looks beyond traditional retail

For Menlyn Park Shopping Centre, the partnership with uRun+ forms part of a broader approach to creating lifestyle-led experiences.

The centre says these experiences are designed to give customers new reasons to visit, connect and engage with the space beyond traditional shopping.

Nisha Kemraj, General Manager of Menlyn Park Shopping Centre, said the Maze Run provided an opportunity to bring people together through fitness, entertainment and participation.

“Menlyn Park is committed to creating experiences that extend beyond shopping and bring people together around the things they enjoy.”

She added that the Maze Run allowed customers and the wider Pretoria community to experience fitness differently by bringing together running, entertainment, teamwork and fun.

“We are proud to partner with uRun+ and to bring experiences like this to Menlyn that encourage people to connect, participate and create memorable moments together,” said Kemraj.

Making fitness more inclusive

The Maze Run also highlighted how fitness events can create different ways for people to participate.

The combination of individual races and relay formats allowed participants to approach the challenge according to their own fitness levels.

This helped create a more inclusive experience while maintaining the competitive and energetic nature of the event.

For spectators, the atmosphere in the Menlyn Park parking area added another layer to the experience.

It meant people did not necessarily have to be on the course to be part of the occasion.

uRun+ brings a different approach to running

For uRun+, the Maze Run is about changing how people experience running.

Ruhan Thomas, Project Lead at uRun+, said the event combines several elements that go beyond traditional endurance racing.

“The Maze Run is about creating a different kind of running experience.”

According to Thomas, the format brings together endurance, strategy, teamwork and entertainment, challenging participants while keeping the experience enjoyable and accessible.

The partnership with Menlyn Park also created a setting where participants, friends, families and spectators could share the experience.

Shopping centres as lifestyle destinations

The Menlyn Park and uRun+ partnership reflects a broader shift in how shopping centres can engage with their communities.

Rather than focusing only on retail, spaces such as Menlyn Park can also provide platforms for wellness, sport, lifestyle, entertainment and social connection.

The Maze Run brought those elements together in one experience, giving participants a reason to visit the centre, take part in an activity and connect with others.

For Menlyn Park, it is another example of how lifestyle-led experiences can create new ways for communities to engage with the centre.

And for those who took on the maze, the challenge was about more than distance.

It was about navigating the course, working together, pushing personal limits and enjoying a completely different kind of run.

The uRun+ Maze Run showed that fitness does not have to follow a traditional route. Sometimes, the most memorable way forward is to find your way through the maze.
