CapeGate Invites the Community to Paint 67 Kennels for Shelter Dogs This Mandela Day

This Mandela Day, a paintbrush could become one of the most meaningful tools you pick up.

On Saturday, 18 July 2026, CapeGate Shopping Centre will once again transform its Centre Court into a colourful hub of compassion as The Dogbox Project returns, inviting volunteers to paint 67 kennels for animal shelters in need.

Running from 10:00 to 14:00, the annual initiative encourages families, schools, businesses and individuals to give their time in the spirit of Mandela Day, helping provide safe and weatherproof homes for rescued dogs across the Western Cape.

A Small Act That Makes a Lasting Difference

While many animal shelters regularly receive donations of food and blankets, one essential item often remains out of reach—kennels.

Providing durable shelters for rescued dogs is one of the largest ongoing expenses faced by many welfare organisations, making projects like this an important source of practical support.

CapeGate Shopping Centre, together with its partner businesses, sponsors the kennels, while members of the public bring them to life with colourful paint and creativity.

The result is more than just a painted doghouse.

Each kennel becomes a warm, dry and secure place where a rescued dog can find protection during winter’s cold nights and the heat of summer.

A Mandela Day Tradition That Keeps Growing

The Dogbox Project began in 2012 as a once-off Mandela Day initiative.

More than a decade later, it has become an annual tradition, driven by the ongoing needs of local animal shelters.

For 2026, organisers are aiming to have 67 teams paint 67 kennels, reflecting Mandela Day’s call to dedicate 67 minutes of service to helping others.

Whether participants arrive with an organised team or simply decide to join on the day, every contribution helps ensure another shelter dog receives a place to call home.

Everyone Is Welcome

CapeGate is encouraging businesses, schools, community groups, families and individuals to participate.

No special artistic talent is required—only a willingness to give back.

According to Zoë Enslin, Marketing Manager at CapeGate Shopping Centre, the event has become one of the centre’s most meaningful annual traditions.

“Every Mandela Day, our centre fills with people who simply want to help, and that is what makes The Dogbox Project so special. Whether you bring a team or come on your own, an hour of your time can give a dog somewhere safe and dry to sleep.”

Supporting Six Animal Shelters

Once completed, the painted kennels will be donated to six organisations dedicated to rescuing and caring for vulnerable animals:

  • Grace Animal Sanctuary
  • Fisantekraal Animal Welfare
  • Help a Paw
  • Farm Paws
  • Dead Animals Walking
  • Hantam Animal Rescue

Each kennel will provide practical shelter while also serving as a reminder of what communities can achieve when they come together for a shared purpose.
