Thousands of FirstRand employees rolled up their sleeves this Mandela Month, transforming the spirit of service into meaningful action that will continue to benefit communities long after the commemorative month has ended.

Through FirstRand Volunteers (FRV), the financial services group mobilised 2,500 employees across all nine provinces, joining forces with long-standing community partner Meals on Wheels to strengthen food security, support vulnerable communities and create sustainable solutions that extend beyond immediate relief.

A Nationwide Commitment to Service

In honour of Nelson Mandela’s legacy, FirstRand Volunteers coordinated one of its largest employee volunteer initiatives, bringing colleagues together around a shared mission of making a tangible difference.

Working alongside Meals on Wheels, volunteers packed 2,500 nutritious food parcels destined for vulnerable families while also constructing food-producing garden planters that will support schools, early childhood development centres, old age homes and community-based organisations.

The initiative focused not only on providing emergency food assistance but also on creating lasting opportunities for communities to grow their own food and strengthen long-term food resilience.

Building Sustainable Food Security

Valued at more than R10 million, the 2026 Mandela Month programme extends far beyond a once-off volunteer event.

The initiative includes:

  • Food supplies
  • Agricultural inputs
  • Garden infrastructure
  • Vegetable seedlings
  • Compost
  • Irrigation support
  • Ongoing training

Together, these resources are helping approximately 50 to 60 beneficiary organisations across South Africa that provide daily meals, education, care and essential support services to children, elderly residents and vulnerable families.

By combining immediate food relief with sustainable agricultural initiatives, the programme aims to empower communities with tools that continue delivering value long after Mandela Month concludes.

Turning Mandela Month into Lasting Impact

Rather than limiting volunteer efforts to a single day, FirstRand Volunteers used Mandela Month as an opportunity to strengthen its culture of employee volunteering while delivering practical support where it is needed most.

Employees participated in volunteer rotations that included packing food parcels, planting vegetable seedlings and assembling raised garden planters for beneficiary organisations. Every activation was supported by Meals on Wheels facilitators, programme coordinators and community partners to ensure each project created meaningful community value.

According to Kone Gugushe, Head of Social Investing at FirstRand Group, Mandela Month serves as a reminder that meaningful change begins with individual action.

“Nelson Mandela Month reminds us that meaningful change starts with action. Through the FirstRand Volunteers Programme, our employees came together across the country to deliver both immediate relief and long-term food security solutions for the communities we serve.”

A Partnership Focused on Community Resilience

Meals on Wheels has supported vulnerable South African communities for decades through food distribution programmes while promoting sustainable food security through community gardens and planting initiatives.

The continued partnership with FirstRand Volunteers combines these long-standing community efforts with employee-driven volunteerism, creating both immediate relief for families facing food insecurity and long-term agricultural support that helps communities become more resilient.

Volunteering Beyond Mandela Month

The Mandela Month initiative forms part of FirstRand’s broader employee volunteering programme, which encourages staff members to dedicate their time and skills to registered causes that matter to them.

By connecting employees with community organisations across South Africa, the programme continues to create opportunities for meaningful social impact while reinforcing the value of collective action.

As thousands of volunteers packed food parcels, planted gardens and supported local organisations this Mandela Month, the initiative demonstrated that honouring Nelson Mandela’s legacy is not only about remembering the past, but also about investing in stronger, healthier and more sustainable communities for the future.
