Carmen: Joburg Ballet Opens Its 25th Anniversary Season in Dramatic Fashion

On Friday, 25 September 2026, The Vibe ZA joined audiences at Joburg Theatre for the opening night of Joburg Ballet’s Carmen — a production that brings together 25 years of artistic legacy, a celebrated South African choreographer and two principal dancers marking a decade with the company.

There is something fitting about celebrating 25 years of artistic history with a story as dramatic, passionate and enduring as Carmen.

On Friday evening, 25 September 2026, Joburg Ballet officially opened its September season of Carmen: The Ballet at the Mandela Theatre at Joburg Theatre. For the company, however, this was more than the opening of another production.

It was the beginning of a 25th anniversary celebration.

For the audience, it was an opportunity to experience one of ballet’s most recognisable stories through the choreography of Veronica Paeper, the music of Georges Bizet, and a company bringing together established performers and emerging talent.

For Joburg Ballet, it was a moment to look back at a quarter-century of South African artistic achievement while placing the next generation of dancers firmly on the stage.

And Carmen proved a fitting choice for that moment.

A 25th Anniversary Begins With Carmen

Joburg Ballet’s 25th anniversary is a significant milestone.

Rather than choosing a production defined solely by celebration, the company has placed a work of considerable dramatic weight at the heart of the occasion.

Carmen tells the story of a free-spirited woman whose relationship with the soldier Don José develops into a destructive cycle of passion, obsession and betrayal. When Carmen’s affections turn towards the bullfighter Escamillo, the story moves towards its tragic conclusion.

It is a narrative that has been interpreted across generations and artistic disciplines.

On the ballet stage, Paeper’s choreography gives the story a physical language.

Her interpretation combines classical ballet technique with dramatic storytelling and Spanish-inspired characterisation, allowing Bizet’s celebrated score to become part of the movement and narrative rather than simply accompanying it.

That dramatic quality makes Carmen a natural fit for an anniversary season that is also about the company’s continuing artistic evolution.

Opening Night Belonged to Experience and Legacy

For The Vibe ZA, being in the theatre on opening night placed the production within the atmosphere of a significant moment for the company.

This was not simply another date on the ballet calendar.

It was the first evening of a production carrying the weight of 25 years of Joburg Ballet history.

The occasion also marked a particularly meaningful milestone for two of the company’s principal dancers.

Monike Cristina and Revil Yon are celebrating 10 years with Joburg Ballet, and their involvement gives this anniversary season an additional layer of continuity.

A decade is a considerable chapter in the career of a professional dancer.

To reach that milestone while performing during the company’s 25th anniversary season makes their presence in Carmen especially significant.

Monike Cristina Steps Into Carmen

Cristina takes on the role of Carmen, one of ballet’s most recognisable and demanding characters.

The role requires more than technical ability. Carmen’s identity is rooted in freedom, independence and emotional complexity, while her relationships drive much of the production’s dramatic tension.

Cristina also entered the 2026 season following recognition at the 2026 Naledi Theatre Awards, where she received the award for Best Performance in a Dance, Physical Theatre, or Ballet Production for her performance in Maria Callas.

That recognition forms part of the context surrounding her appearance in this production.

For an anniversary season built around artistic excellence and renewal, placing a recently recognised principal dancer in the title role gives the production another important connection between Joburg Ballet’s established legacy and its current generation of artists.

Revil Yon Brings Don José to the Stage

Opposite Cristina is Revil Yon as Don José.

Yon holds the distinction of being identified as the only South African male principal dancer in the country, making his role within the company particularly notable.

Don José’s journey is central to the tragedy of Carmen.

He begins as a soldier whose encounter with Carmen changes the direction of his life. What follows is a descent into obsession and jealousy as Carmen’s desire for freedom clashes with his increasingly possessive love.

That emotional transformation gives the role significant dramatic demands alongside its technical requirements.

Yon and Cristina’s 10-year association with Joburg Ballet also places their appearance in the opening-night cast within the wider story of the company’s own evolution.

Paeper’s Choreography Gives Carmen Its Identity

One of the defining elements of this production is Veronica Paeper’s choreography.

Paeper is one of South Africa’s distinguished choreographic voices, and her Carmen is recognised for its dramatic storytelling and electrifying interpretation of the character and her world.

The choreography works with Bizet’s music to translate the emotional intensity of the story into movement.

That is an important distinction.

Carmen is not simply a ballet with a famous score.

It is a dramatic narrative in which the dancers must communicate relationships, conflict and emotion through their bodies.

Paeper’s approach brings together the precision expected from classical ballet with the theatrical demands of a story filled with passion, betrayal and revenge.

A Cast That Represents Continuity

One of the most interesting elements of Joburg Ballet’s anniversary production is the combination of established performers and newer talent.

The production features different casting combinations, including Ryoko Yagyu and Ivan Domiciano, allowing audiences to encounter different interpretations of the central characters.

That approach also supports an important part of Joburg Ballet’s anniversary story: the passing of knowledge between generations of South African dancers.

A company’s legacy is not created only by the artists who have already made their mark.

It continues when experience is shared, new dancers are given opportunities and established traditions are carried forward while being interpreted by a new generation.

Carmen reflects that process.

Why Carmen Works for a 25th Anniversary

There is a striking connection between the story Joburg Ballet is telling through its anniversary and the story unfolding within Carmen.

The production is rooted in tradition, but it is being performed by artists of the present.

It draws from a classic score, but Paeper’s choreography gives it a distinctive theatrical identity.

It celebrates dancers with years of experience while creating space for emerging performers.

And it brings a work with a long performance history into another chapter of Joburg Ballet’s own history.

That makes Carmen more than a straightforward revival.

It becomes part of the company’s continuing story.

The Vibe ZA’s Opening-Night Take

Walking into Joburg Theatre on Friday, 25 September, the significance of the evening was clear: Joburg Ballet was opening a production during a landmark year for the company.

Carmen carries the kind of story that demands attention.

It has passion.

It has conflict.

It has betrayal.

It has tragedy.

And, through ballet, it has the opportunity to communicate all of that without relying on conventional dialogue.

For Joburg Ballet, the production also provides a powerful way to mark its 25th anniversary: by bringing together the company’s history, its current principal dancers, its emerging talent and the work of a major South African choreographic voice.

The presence of Cristina and Yon, both marking 10 years with the company, makes that sense of continuity even more tangible.

And with Paeper’s choreography set against Bizet’s unforgettable score, Carmen has the artistic ingredients for a production that connects classical ballet with theatrical storytelling.

A Quarter-Century, One Stage and a Story That Still Burns

Twenty-five years is a remarkable chapter for any arts institution.

For Joburg Ballet, the anniversary provides an opportunity to celebrate the dancers, choreographers and creative voices that have contributed to its journey while looking towards the future of South African ballet.

Opening that celebration with Carmen places passion and drama at the centre of the occasion.

On Friday night, that anniversary journey officially began.

And as the curtain rose on Carmen, Joburg Ballet was not simply revisiting a famous story.

It was adding another chapter to its own.

Joburg Ballet’s Carmen: The Ballet runs at the Mandela Theatre at Joburg Theatre from 25 September to 4 October 2026, before moving to the South African State Theatre in Pretoria for performances on 24 and 25 October 2026.

For audiences who appreciate classical ballet, dramatic storytelling and the enduring power of live performance, Carmen offers an opportunity to experience a production that sits at the intersection of tradition, talent and a new chapter in Joburg Ballet’s 25-year journey.
