A wine from KWV’s flagship The Mentors range has been named the Best in Show South African Red at the 2022 Mundus Vini Summer Tasting. The Mentors Canvas 2019 red blend received the highest rating in its category at the competition that annually draws some 11 000 entries from around the globe.

At the same time, KWV was named Best Producer from South Africa. The title was bestowed following the success of The Mentors Canvas 2019 and additional Gold medals awarded to The Mentors Orchestra 2019, Petit Verdot 2019, Pinotage 2019, Grenache Blanc 2020 and Chenin Blanc 2020.

“The Mentors range was founded in the pursuit of wine perfection. Time and again, this courageous and pioneering spirit has been acknowledged,” says winemaker Izele van Blerk, who is responsible for the flagship range. “These latest accolades re-affirm this legacy and are a credit to all who have contributed to the success of these exceptional wines.”

Mundus Vini is an international competition founded in Germany that takes place over the course of a year with a summer tasting in August and spring tasting in February. Its panels of experts comprise oenologists, winemakers, professional wine traders, sommeliers and expert journalists.

Gold is awarded to wines achieving a rating of over 90 points in the 100-point judging system.

The achievement at Mundus Vini follows on the heels of similar acclaim for The Mentors wines in the latest South Africa Report by UK-based Tim Atkin MW.

Atkin awarded scores of 93 to KWV The Mentors Cabernet Franc 2020, Chenin Blanc 2021, Grenache Blanc 2021, Perold 2020 and Petit Verdot 2020; and 92 to KWV The Mentors  Canvas 2020, Orchestra 2020 and Pinotage 2020.
