Joburg Ballet is thrilled to announce that the company’s award-winning production of La Traviata -The Ballet comes to the beautiful Teatro at Montecasino for the first time for a short season of just five performances from 2 to 4 August.

Winner of a 2021 Naledi Theatre Award, La Traviata -The Ballet is acclaimed as one of the finest ballets by the celebrated choreographer, Veronica Paeper. South Africa’s leading choreographer in the classical style, Paeper has created an extensive repertoire of ballets and is particularly admired for her full-length story ballets, among which La Traviata -The Ballet is one of her most popular works.

Originally created in Cape Town in 1990, La Traviata -The Ballet is based on the 19th century story of the Lady of the Camellias. A deeply moving portrait of a woman who sacrifices all for the man she loves, the ballet is set to the unforgettable music of Verdi’s opera La Traviata, arranged and adapted for the ballet by composer Allan Stephenson.

In addition to performances in South Africa, La Traviata -The Ballet has been presented in the UK where critics admired it as “outstanding”, “graceful, passionate and ravishingly romantic” and “an utterly compelling production”.

Although there are only five performances of La Traviata -The Ballet at Montecasino, Joburg Ballet brings audiences four casts in the two leading roles. Shannon Glover and Marlon Sales dance on Friday 2 August at 20h00 and Sunday 4 August at 15h00; Nicole Ferreira-Dill and Bruno Miranda on Saturday 3 August at 15h00; Monike Cristina and Ruan Galdino on Saturday 3 August at 20h00; and Tammy Higgins and Revil Yon on Sunday 4 August at 11h00.

This year marks principal dancer Shannon Glover’s 20th anniversary with Joburg Ballet. The occasion will be celebrated in an onstage tribute to the ballerina at the end of the opening night performance of La Traviata -The Ballet on Friday 2 August.

Commenting on the return of La Traviata – The Ballet to the Johannesburg stage, Joburg Ballet CEO Elroy Fillis-Bell said: “We’re delighted to be bringing this magnificent ballet to the Teatro at Montecasino for the first time and to have Veronica Paeper, doyenne of South African choreographers with us in Johannesburg to restage one of her most distinguished works. It’s a privilege to have Veronica working with our beautiful dancers in bringing this searing story of love and sacrifice to the stage. It’s also the perfect ballet to mark Shannon Glover’s 20th anniversary with Joburg Ballet as Shannon will be returning to a role she has danced with great distinction in previous seasons.”
