Naan Sense: Where Durban Indian Cuisine Meets Edible Theatre

On Saturday, 16 August 2025, for one night only, Naan Sense will transform Shepstone Gardens into a stage where Durban Indian heritage meets cutting-edge molecular gastronomy.

This isn’t just dinner — it’s a multi-sensory, edible orchestra that plays with flavour, sight, sound, and imagination.

🎭 The Vision Behind the Flavours

Created by Ivana Pillay, Naan Sense is a deeply personal tribute to her Durban Indian roots.

“Durban Indian cuisine is synonymous with nostalgia for me, rooted in my family’s origins,” says Pillay. “My fascination with molecular gastronomy inspired me to create a multi-sensory edible orchestra that goes beyond the plate.”

The result? Seven acts of culinary theatre, where each course is a story and each bite is an event.

🍽 A Dining Experience Like No Other

Guests choose between two secret menus revealed at the table:

  • The Jungle Garden — a vegetarian odyssey through spice and earth.

  • The Beach Front — a seafood celebration of Durban’s coastal heritage.

Expect Halal-friendly dishes (not certified) featuring rare Durban ingredients like betel leaf and holy basil (Tulsi) — reimagined with avant-garde flair.

The show includes:

  • A live qawwali orchestra to accompany your meal.

  • One course served blindfolded in total silence.

  • Storytelling by The Gastronomist for each act.

⏳ Timings & Ticketing

  • The Table — Seven-course immersive experience: R2,750–R3,100 (includes artisanal beverage pairing).

  • Silk Hour — A two-hour surreal prelude: R2,000 (available only with The Table).

Sittings for The Table: 12h00, 16h00, 20h00
Silk Hour: 10h00, 14h00, 18h00
