Insurance is usually about protecting what matters when something goes wrong.
But what if your cover could also help make a difference when things go right?
This year, Naked customers helped direct R2.3 million to 13 causes across South Africa through The Naked Difference.
That brings the total support generated since Naked began to R6.6 million.
And behind that figure is something simple: customers choosing where they want the good to go.
Turning insurance into something more
Your Naked cover is there for the moments nobody wants to experience.
A crash. A break-in. A burst geyser. Or another unexpected problem that suddenly needs your attention.
But when money remains after claims, Naked gives it a second purpose through The Naked Difference.
Instead of becoming additional profit for Naked, that money goes towards causes selected by Naked customers.
This year, those choices supported 13 South African causes, including organisations such as Oscars Arc, the Kolisi Foundation, Greenpop and Good Morning Angels.
There are no fundraising drives or donation forms involved.
The good comes from being a Naked customer and choosing a cause through the app.
How The Naked Difference works
The model is built around separating the money used to run Naked from the money set aside to pay claims.
Naked earns a flat fee for running the business. According to the company, that fee remains the same whether it pays one claim or a thousand.
The rest of the premium goes into a shared pool used for valid claims and related costs.
The process is straightforward:
1. You pay your premium.
Your insurance premium funds your cover.
2. Naked keeps a flat fee.
That fee is used to run the business and does not change depending on the number of claims paid.
3. The remaining money goes into a shared pool.
The pool is used to pay valid claims and related costs.
4. Any money left at the end of the year goes to causes.
If money remains in the pool after those costs, it does not become additional profit for Naked. Instead, it is distributed to causes selected by Naked customers.
That is the principle behind The Naked Difference.
Customers decide where the money goes
The most distinctive part of the model is the customer choice.
Every Naked customer can select a cause through the app.
The more customers who choose a particular cause, the larger its share of the available money.
This year, those individual decisions helped determine how R2.3 million was distributed among 13 causes working across South Africa.
One selection might seem small on its own.
Thousands of selections, however, can add up.
Since Naked began, customer choices have helped generate R6.6 million in support.
Your cover can do more than protect you
Insurance is ultimately designed for uncertainty.
You pay for protection because you want to know that when something unexpected happens, there is cover in place.
The Naked Difference adds another element to that relationship.
When claims and related costs leave money in the shared pool at the end of the year, that money can support causes chosen by the very customers who helped create it.
This year’s R2.3 million contribution shows how those choices can add up across a customer base.
And the total of R6.6 million since Naked began shows the longer-term impact of the model.
How to choose your cause
Haven’t selected a cause yet?
Naked says it only takes a few taps in the app.
Open the Naked app.
Then tap the person icon in the bottom-right corner.
Finally, choose the cause you care about.
There is nothing extra to pay for making the choice.
Your selection simply helps determine where the next Naked Difference contribution goes.
A different kind of insurance story
The Naked Difference puts an interesting question at the centre of insurance:
What happens to the money when you don’t need to use your cover?
For Naked customers, the answer can be more than simply another number on a balance sheet.
This year, it became R2.3 million directed towards 13 South African causes.
And every customer who chose a cause played a part.
Because sometimes, the difference isn’t only in what your insurance protects.
It’s in what it can help make possible when you don’t need it.
