The countdown is on! With less than two weeks to go, excitement is building for the return of the beloved Old Mutual Music in the Gardens series. Set against the stunning backdrop of Mushroom Farm Park in Sandton, Johannesburg, this year’s series promises to be unforgettable. The 2024 season kicks off on Sunday, September 8th, with a lineup that’s guaranteed to electrify music lovers.
Headlining the opening concert is none other than internationally acclaimed PJ Morton, who is bringing his Grammy-winning talents to our shores as part of the SA leg of his “Cape Town to Cairo Tour”. For Morton, this tour is more than just a series of performances; it’s a homecoming to the country that sparked the creativity behind his latest album, ‘Cape Town to Cairo’. “I really wanted to circle back to the place that inspired the new album,” says Morton. “It feels surreal to be right back to the place that I was in less than a year ago, writing a complete album. There’s just such a connection now. I’m looking forward to it.”
The Joburg audience can expect an even more dynamic experience than before, with his 11-piece Afro Orleans Band and an energy that promises to elevate the live performance to new heights. “They can expect an even bigger band, more energy and new music mixed in with all the other songs people love,” Morton adds.
Joining PJ Morton are two extraordinary South African talents. Mandisi Dyantyis, a celebrated trumpeter and Afro-Soul-Jazz vocalist, will bring his powerful, emotive sound to the stage. Known for his critically acclaimed albums “Somandla” and “Cwaka,” Dyantyis is sure to captivate with his heartfelt performances and rich musical compositions.
Adding to the star-studded lineup is rising star Wandile Mbambeni. Hailing from Johannesburg, Mbambeni’s unique blend of soul and African folk-country has garnered him international attention. Having previously shared the stage with PJ Morton, Mbambeni is ready to showcase his captivating voice and storytelling skills to a hometown crowd.
“Old Mutual is thrilled to bring back the Music in the Gardens series, which has become a highlight in Johannesburg’s cultural calendar. Joburg’s first concert lineup, featuring the extraordinary talents of PJ Morton, Mandisi Dyantyis, and Wandile Mbambeni, promises to deliver an unparalleled musical experience. We are proud to support events that not only entertain but also create spaces for community connection amidst the beauty of nature. We look forward to welcoming everyone to what will undoubtedly be an unforgettable day,” says Bandile Mngoma, Old Mutual Senior Manager for Sponsorships.
