The rhythm is already building.

With the 27th edition of the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz set to take over the Sandton Convention Centre this weekend, The Vibes ZA was given an exclusive preview of the artistry and musical energy awaiting audiences.

Organised by Standard Bank and hosted at Kaya House in Rosebank, the intimate Unplugged Session offered a compelling glimpse into the sound, heritage and creative spirit that continue to define one of Africa’s premier jazz festivals.

The afternoon began at 14:00 as part of Brenda Sisane’s The Jazz Standard, broadcasting live on Kaya 959. From the moment guests arrived, the atmosphere carried a sense of anticipation. Media, music lovers and industry insiders gathered over canapé-style light bites and refreshing drinks, creating an intimate setting for an afternoon centred on the music.

But this was far more than simply a preview.

It was a meeting point between African heritage, contemporary jazz and the artists shaping the sound of today.

Ndabo Zulu & Umgidi Ensemble: Where Heritage Meets Sound

At the heart of the afternoon was trumpeter, composer and arranger Ndabo Zulu, who brought together his acclaimed Umgidi Ensemble for the showcase.

The ensemble featured an impressive collection of South African contemporary jazz talent, including Nduduzo Makhathini, Dalisu Ndlazi, Sphelelo Mazibuko, Gontse Makhene and Linda Sikhakhane, alongside featured vocalists Muneyi and Paras Dlamini.

Together, they created a performance deeply rooted in Southern African musical traditions while embracing the expansive possibilities of orchestral scale and improvisation.

The result was a sound that felt cinematic, spiritual and intensely connected to African storytelling.

Drawing from their critically acclaimed, genre-defying body of work ** Queen Nandi: The African Symphony **, Ndabo Zulu & Umgidi Ensemble brought together complex choral textures, indigenous percussion and commanding brass lines.

Every element contributed to a musical expression centred on African memory, heritage and collective storytelling.

It was a powerful reminder that jazz can do more than entertain. It can carry stories, preserve memory and create space for different generations of musical expression to meet.

Gurulogic Brings a Fresh Pulse

Adding another dimension to the afternoon was Gurulogic, whose performance introduced a distinctly contemporary energy to the session.

Their appearance highlighted the broad spectrum of sounds embraced by the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz — a festival that continues to connect traditional musical roots with modern experimentation.

The contrast created a compelling sense of what lies ahead.

Where one performance explored heritage through expansive orchestration, Gurulogic brought another layer of contemporary energy, reinforcing the festival’s ability to embrace different expressions of jazz and the evolving sounds surrounding it.

Together, the performances created an exciting preview of the musical journey awaiting audiences when the festival stages come alive.

The Countdown to Sandton Begins

There was something particularly fitting about experiencing the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz in such an intimate environment before the festival itself takes over Sandton.

The Unplugged Session brought artists, media, industry insiders and music lovers into the same room, creating a shared moment around the music before the larger celebration begins.

For The VibeZA, being able to experience these performances up close offered a powerful prelude to the main event.

The Standard Bank Joy of Jazz represents more than a collection of performances. Through its celebration of African identity, artistic expression and musical communion, it continues to create a space where heritage and contemporary creativity can meet.

Now, with the 27th edition ready to unfold at the Sandton Convention Centre this weekend, the stage is set.

The music is ready.

Johannesburg is ready.

And after this intimate taste of what awaits, the anticipation for the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz has only grown louder.
