Two icons of South African golf will take their place among the country’s greatest achievers this September. The South African Hall of Fame has announced that Denis Hutchinson and Theo Manyama will be officially inducted at the PGA Annual Awards Gala Dinner, hosted at the prestigious Royal Johannesburg & Kensington Golf Club.

Honouring Legends of the Game

Denis Hutchinson – “The Voice of Golf”

Denis Hutchinson

Known affectionately as “Hutchie,” Denis Hutchinson has shaped the game in South Africa for more than six decades.

  • As a player, Hutchinson enjoyed a celebrated professional career, winning tournaments across Europe and South Africa, including the 1959 South African Open.

  • As a commentator and broadcaster, his iconic voice became synonymous with golf coverage, guiding millions of fans through unforgettable moments on the fairways.

  • As an ambassador, Hutchinson has dedicated his life to promoting the game, mentoring young talent, and preserving the traditions of South African golf.

Today, he stands as Honorary Life President of the PGA of South Africa and a cornerstone of the South African Golf Hall of Fame. His induction into the broader South African Hall of Fame acknowledges not only his sporting excellence but also his enduring cultural impact.

Theo Manyama – From Caddy to Global Golf Authority

Theo Manyama

Few journeys in golf are as inspiring as that of Theo Manyama. From humble beginnings as a schoolboy caddy, Manyama’s persistence and passion propelled him into the international spotlight.

  • He became one of the most respected rules officials in world golf, achieving the rare distinction of officiating at all four major championships — the Masters, The Open Championship, the U.S. Open, and the PGA Championship — a “Grand Slam” that only a select few in history have accomplished.

  • At home, his decades of service to the Sunshine Tour elevated professional golf in South Africa, while his dedication to inclusivity and mentorship opened doors for countless young players from disadvantaged backgrounds.

  • Manyama’s story is a powerful testament to transformation in sport: showing how opportunity, guidance, and determination can change lives.

A Legacy That Transcends Sport

“These two icons truly embody the values of the South African Hall of Fame,” says Johnny Burger, Chairman of the South African Hall of Fame.

  • “Denis Hutchinson represents a legacy of excellence, mastery, and enduring contribution to the game. Theo Manyama represents transformation, upliftment, and the power of opportunity to reshape lives and communities. Together, their stories reflect both where we’ve come from — and where we’re going.”

Their induction is not only a celebration of personal achievement but also a symbol of golf’s power to inspire across generations and social divides.

About the South African Hall of Fame

Established in 2017, the South African Hall of Fame is a non-profit trust with a bold mission: Celebrate | Inspire | Empower.

  • Celebrate South Africa’s legends in sport, arts, leadership, and culture, preserving their legacy while inspiring national pride.

  • Inspire future generations through stories of greatness, igniting ambition, resilience, and the belief that extraordinary success is possible.

  • Empower young South Africans through the Legacy Project, providing bursaries, mentorship, and opportunities for talented youth with limited resources.

The Hall of Fame is housed at Sun City, where visitors can explore interactive exhibits showcasing South Africa’s greatest achievers, from sporting icons to cultural visionaries.
