The Overnight Alliance: How Sleep Supports Your Immune System

Sleep may look like downtime, but while you are resting, your body is busy repairing, regulating and supporting the immune response.

There is a strange thing about sleep.

We spend roughly a third of our lives doing it, yet it can feel like we are doing nothing at all.

The reality is very different.

While the world slows down and we close our eyes, the body gets to work. Tissues are repaired. Energy is restored. Memories are consolidated. Hormonal processes are regulated.

And, importantly, the immune system continues its work.

Sleep and immunity are not separate systems working in isolation. They constantly influence one another. Nutrition also plays an important role, providing the nutrients the body needs to support these processes.

Understanding that relationship could change the way we think about a good night’s sleep.

Sleep is when the immune system gets to work

During sleep, the body coordinates a range of immune and inflammatory processes.

One group of molecules involved is cytokines. These proteins help regulate inflammation and coordinate immune responses. Some cytokines can also influence sleep, while others are involved in responding to infection and tissue repair.

The relationship works in both directions.

Your immune system can influence how you sleep, while sleep can influence how your immune system responds.

Research has also linked sleep with the development of immune memory.

In one controlled human study, researchers found that sleeping after hepatitis A vaccination enhanced aspects of the body’s adaptive immune response.

More recent evidence continues to point towards a relationship between insufficient sleep and vaccine responses. A 2023 meta-analysis found that objectively measured short sleep was associated with a reduced antibody response to antiviral vaccination, although the researchers noted that more large-scale studies are needed to determine exactly how much sleep is optimal and when it matters most.

So, while sleep is certainly not a magic shield against illness, it is increasingly clear that sleep is part of the body’s immune-supporting machinery.

Nutrition gives the body the raw materials

Sleep is only one part of the equation.

The body also needs nutrients to support the processes involved in sleep regulation and immune function.

Magnesium, for example, is involved in numerous biological processes, including nervous-system function and energy metabolism.

Zinc plays an important role in normal immune function.

Vitamin C contributes to normal immune-system function and antioxidant protection.

Vitamin D is also involved in immune regulation.

The FoodGrown release highlights these nutrients as part of the nutritional relationship between sleep and immunity, while advocating for food-derived sources.

However, nutrition is not about finding one miracle ingredient.

A varied diet remains the foundation. Supplements may have a role where nutritional needs are not being met, but more is not automatically better, and individual requirements can differ.

That is particularly important when considering supplements for sleep, stress or immune health.

Stress can complicate the picture

Then there is stress.

For many people, the problem is not simply that they do not have enough time to sleep.

It is that their minds and bodies struggle to switch off.

Stress activates the body’s physiological response systems, including the release of cortisol. Persistent stress can affect sleep quality, while poor sleep can, in turn, make it harder to cope with stress.

That can create an uncomfortable cycle:

Stress disrupts sleep.
Poor sleep affects recovery.
Poor recovery can make stress harder to manage.

Certain plant ingredients have been studied for their potential role in stress and sleep.

The FoodGrown release specifically highlights ashwagandha, passionflower, lemon balm and valerian root.

Ashwagandha has been investigated in relation to stress and cortisol, while passionflower, lemon balm and valerian have been studied for their potential effects on relaxation or sleep.

But these ingredients should not be presented as substitutes for healthy sleep habits or medical treatment.

Natural does not automatically mean risk-free, and supplements can interact with medicines or be unsuitable for certain people.

Why do you want to sleep when you’re sick?

There is a reason the body seems to demand the duvet when illness strikes.

During an infection, immune signalling can contribute to fatigue and changes in sleep.

It is part of the body’s broader response to the challenge.

Instead of interpreting that overwhelming tiredness as something to fight at all costs, it can be useful to recognise it as a signal that the body is allocating resources towards recovery.

In simple terms:

Sometimes your body is telling you to stop because recovery needs your attention.

That does not mean every bout of tiredness is caused by an infection. Persistent, severe or unexplained fatigue should always be discussed with a healthcare professional.

So, how much sleep is enough?

For most adults, the commonly recommended target is seven to nine hours of sleep a night.

But the number on the clock is not the entire story.

Sleep quality matters too.

Frequent interruptions, difficulty staying asleep and other forms of fragmented sleep can affect how restorative a night feels.

Research is continuing to investigate exactly how different aspects of sleep influence immune function. A 2026 study, for example, found evidence linking chronic sleep fragmentation with impaired influenza-vaccine immune responses in experimental models, while analysis of more than 900,000 vaccinated adults found an association between obstructive sleep apnoea and influenza infection risk.

That does not mean one bad night’s sleep will make you sick.

It does mean that sleep health deserves to be treated as part of overall health rather than an optional luxury.

The bigger picture: sleep, stress and nutrition

This is where the overnight alliance becomes particularly interesting.

Sleep supports immune function.

Nutrition supplies essential nutrients.

Stress can influence both sleep and immune regulation.

And illness can change the amount of sleep your body needs.

These systems are constantly communicating.

There is no single food, supplement or bedtime routine that can replace the fundamentals. A balanced diet, adequate sleep, regular physical activity, sensible stress management and appropriate medical care all have a place in maintaining health.

For people considering supplements, the same principle applies: they should complement healthy habits rather than replace them.

The simplest health intervention may happen tonight

Modern life has made sleep strangely negotiable.

We work late.

We scroll late.

We answer one more message.

We watch one more episode.

We tell ourselves we will catch up tomorrow.

But while we are negotiating with the clock, the body is still waiting for its opportunity to recover.

Sleep is not time stolen from productivity.

It is part of the work.

The immune system does not clock off when you close your eyes. It continues coordinating the processes that help the body respond, repair and recover.

And perhaps that makes the humble night’s sleep worth looking at differently.

Not as lost time.

Not as laziness.

Not as an afterthought.

But as one of the body’s most important overnight shifts.

Sometimes the best thing you can do for tomorrow is go to bed tonight.
