Tino Ngorima: From Kyalami to the U.S. Stage

At just 24, Tino Ngorima is already carving out a promising place for herself in the U.S. film and theatre industry.

The young actress from Kyalami, South Africa, has recently completed filming her leading role in Timeless Woman, a project scheduled for release later this year. The role pushed Ngorima into new territory as she portrayed the perspective of an African American woman navigating the complexities of an interracial relationship in contemporary America.

It is a significant step in an emerging career that has already taken her across continents and into major acting institutions.

From Johannesburg to NYU Tisch and RADA

Ngorima’s journey has been shaped by serious training.

In 2025, she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Acting from NYU Tisch in New York. A year earlier, in 2024, she completed a full semester at London’s Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA).

Her time at NYU Tisch gave her opportunities to put that training into practice.

She played Love in Everybody at the Marilyn Monroe Theatre in New York. She also took on the role of Casca in Julius Caesar at the GBS Theatre in London.

Her work soon caught further industry attention. Shortly after her performances, she was cast in an industry script reading at the Bush Theatre.

Then came another important milestone.

An Off-Broadway breakthrough

Following her graduation, Ngorima made her Off-Broadway debut as Lady Capulet and Lady Montague in an adaptation of Romeo & Juliet.

The production sold out at a New York theatre, marking an impressive early achievement for the South African actress.

She has since secured another Off-Broadway role in the play Fairies. The production will return in 2027 following popular demand.

For Ngorima, the stage remains an important part of her artistic journey. Yet her ambitions extend beyond performing.

From actress to producer

Ngorima is also a trained dancer. She began studying dance during her early years at an all-girls school in Johannesburg.

That multidisciplinary background continues to influence her creative ambitions.

She is now moving into producing and is in pre-production on her first short film, Lover girl, in which she will star as the lead.

The film explores female friendships and the complexities of romantic relationships.

For Ngorima, these are stories worth telling because they can travel beyond borders.

“I am drawn to stories about women, particularly universal narratives that resonate across cultures,” she says.

That interest in universal storytelling could become a defining thread in her growing body of work.

The teacher who changed everything

Behind the international opportunities is a story that began much closer to home.

Ngorima credits her parents with nurturing both her academic interests and her appreciation for pop culture. They encouraged her to watch a variety of adult comedies, helping her develop her sense of humour and understand how entertainment can connect with audiences.

However, she also remembers one person who helped turn acting from an interest into a possible career.

A South African school teacher took a chance on her by giving her a leading role in a school production.

That opportunity proved pivotal.

Ngorima says the experience solidified her desire to pursue acting professionally.

From that school production in South Africa to New York theatre stages, the journey has since taken her much further than she could have imagined.

A vision that crosses continents

Ngorima’s ambitions are not limited to building a career overseas.

She hopes to work on cross-continental productions and wants to see more films made in South Africa, with local talent collaborating with international crews.

Her vision is rooted in a belief in the strength of African creative talent.

“South Africa is home to some of the best talent in the world, and I want to contribute to the recognition and celebration of African storytellers,” she says.

It is a vision that places her own career within a much bigger conversation about African stories, international collaboration and the movement of talent across borders.

The next chapter

While Timeless Woman prepares for its release later this year, Ngorima is already looking ahead.

She is currently involved in a stage reading of Good Mothers, a play being workshopped for an eventual premiere at the Edinburgh International Festival in Scotland.

At 24, she has already built a résumé spanning acting, dance, theatre, film and producing.

But perhaps the most exciting part of Tino Ngorima’s story is that this still feels like the beginning.

From Kyalami to NYU Tisch, RADA, Off-Broadway and film, her journey is gathering momentum.

And as she continues moving between South Africa, the United States and the wider international creative landscape, Ngorima is pursuing something bigger than a career on stage and screen.

She is building a place for herself in a global industry while carrying with her a clear belief in the power of African storytellers.
