Tips to Explore SA Safely this Tourism Month

As we celebrate Tourism Month, under the theme of ‘Tourism and peace – 30 years of connecting people, places, and culture’, now’s the perfect time to reflect on the incredible diversity and rich heritage that make South Africa a top destination for 8.5 million tourists in 2023, almost 50% more than in 2022. So, why not use September to explore our beautiful country safely and responsibly?

For many of us, the idea of taking a sho’t left offers the perfect opportunity to rediscover the beauty in our backyard. However, while it’s thrilling to hit the road, ensuring your safety and security – both at home and during your travels – must be a priority.

“Tourism plays a vital role in South Africa’s economy, having grown significantly over the past three decades to become a key driver of employment and economic activity. But, while it’s exciting to travel and explore our beautiful country, it’s crucial to remember that safety should always come first,” says Sakina Ntuli, spokesperson at King Price Insurance.

“As we embrace the wonders within our borders, it’s important to ensure that we’re well-prepared and protected. Whether it’s for your car, portable possessions, or your home and everything in it, having the right kind of insurance is essential for providing peace of mind.”

Below, Ntuli shares her top tips to travel safely like a tourist:

Be aware of your surroundings: Whether you’re in a bustling city or a quiet village, always be conscious of your environment. Avoid secluded areas after dark and keep your belongings close.
Stay connected: Inform friends or family of your travel plans and check in with them regularly. This is particularly important when travelling to remote areas.
Insure your portable possessions: Phones, cameras, laptops – these are items we can’t imagine travelling without. Unfortunately, they’re also prime targets for theft and can all-too-easily be accidentally damaged. Portable possession insurance plays a major role in protecting these valuables while you – and they – are on the go. If your portable possessions are covered correctly, you’ll have peace of mind if something happens to them.
Secure your home: Of course, while you’re out exploring, you must make sure that your home is protected too. Check that your buildings and home contents insurance are up to date. Also, review your policy’s terms on how long your home can be unoccupied while you travel. Many policies have limits on ‘unoccupied days’. Double-check this before you start your trip to avoid potential claim issues.

Granted, insurance isn’t the first thing many of us think of when caught up in the excitement of a local getaway. And yet, it’s something that must be a priority.

“Tourism Month is a celebration of all that South Africa has to offer. By taking a few simple precautions and ensuring that your personal items and home are protected, you can fully immerse yourself in the experience without the worry of what might go wrong,” concludes Ntuli.
