Spring is a season of fresh beginnings, and at Vergelegen Wine Estate in Somerset West, nature is preparing a spectacular display.

From colourful flower beds to magnificent ancient trees, the historic estate offers a beautiful setting for anyone seeking garden inspiration. This spring, visitors can experience it through a series of guided garden walks led by Vergelegen horticulturist and gardens manager Richard Arm.

The walks will take place daily from Friday, 30 October, to Sunday, 1 November 2026, between 08h30 and 11h00. Tickets cost R250 per person and include estate entry, the guided tour, and tea or coffee with a scone at the Firehorse temporary restaurant before the walk.

For gardening enthusiasts, nature lovers and anyone who appreciates beautiful outdoor spaces, the experience offers an opportunity to explore the estate while learning from the person responsible for its gardens.

Smart garden buys: The Potting Shed Gift Shop offers practical additions to a gardener’s toolkit.

A Spring Journey Through Vergelegen’s Historic Gardens

The guided walk begins in the Sundial Garden, which has recently received fresh, colourful plantings ahead of the reopening of the adjoining Stables restaurant.

From there, visitors will continue through the East Garden, where the first spring agapanthus blooms are beginning to appear.

The journey then leads to the Octagonal Garden, Vergelegen’s oldest estate garden. Known for its colourful herbaceous borders, this historic space frames the pathway towards the estate’s Cape Dutch homestead.

The final stop is the Rose Garden, where ancient camphor trees provide a striking backdrop for dozens of roses. Their colours and fragrances create a memorable conclusion to the garden experience.

Each stop offers a different perspective on the estate’s historic landscape, combining formal garden design with seasonal colour and established trees.

Thousands of Flowers Set to Transform the Estate

According to Arm, this year’s spring display promises plenty of colour.

“The gardens are going to pop this year,” says Arm.

He explains that thousands of delphiniums, foxgloves and salvia have been planted, while the Rose Garden is expected to be particularly beautiful by the end of October.

Favourable weather and plentiful water have also supported the gardens’ seasonal growth.

For visitors, the timing offers an opportunity to experience the estate during a vibrant period in its horticultural calendar. The guided walks will also provide insight into the planting and garden spaces that make Vergelegen a distinctive destination.

Take a Piece of Vergelegen Home

The experience extends beyond the gardens themselves. Visitors will also be able to browse a selection of plants, gardening accessories and lifestyle products at the estate’s Potting Shed Gift Shop.

The shop will stock Vergelegen’s 10 most popular rose varieties, giving visitors the opportunity to purchase roses for their own gardens or as gifts for friends.

Practical gardening accessories include floral-design garden gloves in green or blue. Made from sweat-absorbent fabric with a slip-resistant grip, they retail for R425 per pair. Durable pruning shears are available for R450.

The gift shop also offers lifestyle products inspired by gardening and personal care. These include gardener’s friend exfoliating tallow soap for R150 and whipped tallow butter for R195.

Hand washes and hand creams inspired by fragrances found in Vergelegen’s gardens, including rose, honey and white wisteria, retail for R350 each.

For those who cannot visit the estate in person, Vergelegen has expanded its online retail offering, allowing shoppers to purchase a wider variety of estate products through its online shop.
