Award-winning epic The Woman King is available to download & keep, and to rent on digital, from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment
Filmed in South Africa and starring South African breakout star Thuso Mbedu alongside the extraordinary Viola Davis, The Woman King is making its much-anticipated debut on DStv Box Office, Apple TV, Google Play and other services this month.

This acclaimed historical epic, brought to you by Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, has received three BAFTA nominations, four Critics Choice nominations and a Golden Globe nomination. Notably, the film won best picture at this year’s African American Film Critics Association Awards as well as best director for Gina Prince-Bythewood.

Oscar winner Davis (Fences, The Help, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom) has been singled out for praise for her awards-worthy turn as General Nanisca, who heads up the Agojie, an all-female military unit protecting the West African Kingdom of Dahomey in the 1800s.

Inspired by true events, The Woman King tells the remarkable story of the trials and tribulations of the fierce Agojie warriors and Dahomey, a region in present-day Benin. Interestingly, it was filmed in KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape, using locations that strongly resemble West Africa.

Mbedu (who won an Independent Spirit Award, a Gotham Award and a Hollywood Critics Award for her breakout international starring role in The Underground Railroad) plays Nawi, an ambitious recruit within General Nanisca’s unit.

The Woman King has been praised around the world, garnering 13 awards wins this season so far as well as more than 100 nominations. The Guardian hailed it as an “ass-kicking, thought-provoking epic inspired by a real-life all-female army”, while The New York Times said that Davis “slays” as she “leads a strong cast into battle”.

Directed by a woman and sporting a powerhouse women-led cast, The Woman King embodies stirring, action-packed and empowering storytelling at its finest, deeply rooted in Africa and reimagining history in a way that resonates strongly with modern audiences. Watch it from the comfort of your home – and be both entertained and inspired by this all-female army as they fight their way into movie history!
