YOU FM Marks Historic Milestone

Half a Million Listeners and a New Era for North West Radio

YOU FM this week announced a landmark achievement: the station now reaches half a million listeners across traditional radio, digital platforms and streaming, according to WhyFive’s BrandMapp 2025. The figure cements YOU FM’s position as the biggest urban commercial radio station in the North West province, and underlines how local storytelling, authentic presenters and an unapologetically urban sound have reshaped the region’s media landscape.

“This is not just a ratings milestone — it’s proof of confidence from our communities,” says Tebogo Mashego, Managing Director of YOU FM. “We are not just a radio station. We are a movement, a mirror of modern South Africa, loud, proud, and unapologetically urban.”

Local roots, national relevance

YOU FM’s growth is rooted in programming that reflects community life: local news, culturally resonant music, and conversation that speaks directly to the daily realities of listeners across age groups, cultures and geographies. The station’s hybrid approach — marrying traditional broadcasting with strong digital and streaming channels — has expanded its reach beyond conventional airwaves, capturing audiences who consume content on multiple platforms.

A platform for talent and transformation

Beyond music and talk, YOU FM positions itself as an engine of opportunity. The station has become a springboard for local talent, developing presenters, producers and creatives through internships and on-air opportunities that have led many to national profiles. By opening doors to prime-time slots and practical broadcasting experience, YOU FM has created a pathway from local discovery to wider industry success.

YOU FM also amplifies community causes: education campaigns, influencer collaborations and civic initiatives form an integral part of its programming. The station’s producers say the true measure of success is not only audience size but the lives changed through advocacy, partnerships and grassroots engagement.

Why the half-million matters

Half a million listeners in a single province — spread across live radio, streaming and digital touchpoints — is a notable market achievement, and one that carries commercial and social weight. For advertisers and community partners, the scale demonstrates the station’s ability to mobilise attention, shape public conversation and deliver measurable impact across both urban centres and outlying communities.

Looking ahead

With the BrandMapp 2025 results in hand, YOU FM’s leadership says the focus now is sustaining growth while deepening civic impact. The station plans to continue investing in local talent development, community-driven content and multiplatform storytelling that keeps listeners connected and represented.

As Mashego put it: “We tell stories that matter, uplift voices that were once unheard, and stand shoulder to shoulder with our communities. This milestone reflects the trust listeners place in us — and it comes with the responsibility to keep serving them well.”
