Autumn is a wonderful season full of beautiful scenery, crisp air, and warm sweaters. However, it’s also a season that can be tough on our skin. With the change in weather, it’s important to adjust your skincare routine to keep your skin healthy and glowing. In this article, we’ll explore some tips and tricks on how to look after your skin in Autumn, specifically in the South African climate.

Protect your skin from the sun

Although the temperature may be cooler in Autumn, the sun’s UV rays can still be harmful to your skin. To protect your skin, it’s essential to wear sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30. Look for a sunscreen that is formulated specifically for your skin type and needs. If you spend a lot of time outdoors, make sure to reapply your sunscreen every two hours. Some recommended sunscreen brands for the South African climate are Nivea Sun, Bioderma, and La Roche-Posay.

Moisturize regularly

The drop in temperature and humidity can cause your skin to become dry and flaky. To combat this, it’s important to moisturize your skin regularly. Look for a moisturizer that is rich in emollients, such as shea butter or jojoba oil, and that is suitable for your skin type. If your skin is particularly dry, you may want to consider using a heavier moisturizer at night. Some great moisturizer brands to try are Cetaphil, Eucerin, and Neutrogena.

Stay hydrated

Drinking water is essential for maintaining healthy skin. In Autumn, the cooler weather may make you less thirsty, but it’s important to stay hydrated. Drinking water not only helps to keep your skin hydrated but also helps to flush out toxins from your body. Aim to drink at least eight glasses of water a day. If you struggle to drink enough water, you can add some flavor by infusing it with fruits such as lemon, cucumber, or mint.

Exfoliate your skin

Exfoliating your skin helps to remove dead skin cells, revealing brighter and smoother skin. However, it’s important not to overdo it, as too much exfoliation can cause irritation and damage to your skin. Look for a gentle exfoliator that is suitable for your skin type and use it once or twice a week. Some recommended exfoliator brands for the South African climate are The Body Shop, Dermalogica, and Kiehl’s.

Protect your lips

The cooler weather can also cause your lips to become dry and chapped. To protect your lips, use a lip balm that contains SPF and nourishing ingredients such as shea butter or coconut oil. Apply lip balm throughout the day, especially before going outdoors. Some great lip balm brands to try are Burt’s Bees, Labello, and Carmex.
