Few sporting rivalries carry the weight, history and emotion of Springboks versus All Blacks.

It is a fixture that has produced unforgettable matches, iconic players and generations of stories.

And with the two rugby giants preparing to meet again at Ellis Park on Saturday, 22 August 2026, some of South Africa’s most celebrated rugby figures gathered in Pretoria to reflect on what makes the rivalry so special.

On Thursday, Menlyn Park Shopping Centre hosted an exclusive SA Legends Breakfast at The Barnyard Theatre, bringing together former Springboks Victor Matfield, Steven Kitshoff, Breyton Paulse and Ray Mordt.

The gathering formed part of the Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry Tour, a celebration of the history and fierce competition between South Africa and New Zealand.

But this was about more than looking ahead to another Test.

It was about remembering the people and moments that made the rivalry what it is today.

Rugby legends, one unforgettable rivalry

The guest list brought together players from different eras of Springbok rugby.

Victor Matfield, one of South Africa’s most celebrated rugby figures, joined Steven Kitshoff, Breyton Paulse and Ray Mordt for conversations about their careers and experiences of the Springboks versus All Blacks rivalry.

The legends reflected on what it means to wear the green and gold, the pressure that comes with facing New Zealand and the memories that stay with players long after the final whistle.

For fans, it offered a rare opportunity to hear those experiences directly from players who had lived them.

The conversation was driven by Paulse, who facilitated the panel and engaged both the legends and guests with questions covering memorable rivalry matches, career highlights and defining moments.

More than just a rugby breakfast

While rugby was firmly at the centre of the morning, Menlyn Park positioned the event as something broader.

The SA Legends Breakfast was designed to bring customers and the Pretoria community together around a moment that extends beyond the sport itself.

For Nisha Kemraj, General Manager of Menlyn Park Shopping Centre, the rivalry represents generations of memories and emotion.

The centre’s involvement reflects its wider focus on creating experiences that connect sport, entertainment, culture and community.

Rather than simply watching the rivalry unfold on television, guests had an opportunity to sit in the room with some of the players who helped shape its history.

That personal connection is what gave the breakfast its significance.

‘Passion and pride’

For Matfield, the enduring power of rugby comes down to something simple.

Passion.

And pride.

“Rugby is about passion, pride and the moments that bring people together. That’s what makes this game so special,” Matfield said.

It is a sentiment that perhaps explains why Springboks versus All Blacks remains one of international rugby’s most anticipated fixtures.

The rivalry is not simply about two teams meeting on a rugby field.

It carries the memories of previous generations.

It carries the expectations of supporters.

And every new Test adds another chapter.

Kitshoff backs the Springboks

As the conversation shifted towards Saturday’s clash, Kitshoff looked ahead with confidence.

The former Springbok prop expressed his anticipation for the Test and backed the current team to rise to the occasion.

“We’re really looking forward to Saturday. The boys know what’s at stake and I’m confident they’ll give it everything,” Kitshoff said.

With the match approaching, the breakfast provided the perfect setting for former players and supporters to consider what the next chapter could bring.

A rivalry built on memories

One of the defining features of the SA Legends Breakfast was the focus on stories.

The panel explored memorable matches, career highlights and moments that have helped define the Springboks-All Blacks contest.

Those stories are part of the rivalry’s enduring appeal.

Every generation has its own memories.

Every player who pulls on the jersey becomes part of a much larger history.

And every match provides an opportunity for a new moment to join it.

For the guests at Menlyn Park, hearing those stories directly from the legends offered a different perspective on the spectacle that awaits at Ellis Park.

The next chapter awaits at Ellis Park

The SA Legends Breakfast arrived just days before the Springboks and All Blacks meet at Ellis Park on Saturday, 22 August 2026.

For Menlyn Park, it was an opportunity to celebrate the history surrounding one of rugby’s greatest rivalries while building anticipation for its next chapter.

For the legends, it was a chance to revisit careers shaped by some of the biggest moments in international rugby.

And for the guests, it was a morning spent in the company of players who understand better than most what the green and gold represents.

The rivalry continues.

The stories continue.

And on Saturday, another chapter will be written.

Before the Springboks and All Blacks meet on the field, Menlyn Park brought the legends together to remember why this rivalry has always meant so much.
