Mitsubishi’s 150kW Legacy Fund Puts Power Behind South Africa’s Next

Mitsubishi Motors South Africa is turning 150kW of automotive power into R150,000 of community impact, launching a new legacy fund alongside Khuli Chana’s “What’s Next” docu-series.

What if the real measure of power was not how fast you could go, but how far you could help someone else go?

That is the question behind a new initiative from Mitsubishi Motors South Africa (MMSA).

On Thursday, 20 August 2026, the automotive company launched its 150kW Legacy Fund during an exclusive viewing session for Khuli Chana’s What’s Next docu-series at Clearwater in Johannesburg.

The idea is simple.

Take the power associated with one of Mitsubishi Motors’ most recognisable vehicles and turn it into something that can help change lives.

The result is R150,000 that will be shared among three deserving charities this year.

The fund is the first initiative of its kind for MMSA and is built around a belief that everyone deserves the power to find their next.

From 150kW to R150,000

The name of the fund comes directly from the Mitsubishi Triton Bi-Turbo, which produces 150kW of power.

But this time, 150kW means more than what happens underneath a bonnet.

It becomes a target of R150,000 in financial support for three deserving charities.

It is an unexpected connection between automotive performance and community impact.

The Triton Bi-Turbo is the flagship of Mitsubishi Motors South Africa’s Triton range, with its 2.4-litre Bi-Turbo diesel engine producing 150kW and 470Nm.

For MMSA, however, the bigger idea is what happens when that power is shared.

“At Mitsubishi Motors, we’ve always believed that power means nothing if it isn’t shared,” says Lerato Nonyane, General Manager: Product & Marketing at MMSA.

“It felt right to put that same energy behind the people and communities working to build something better.”

The 150kW Legacy Fund, she adds, is designed to make sure that power reaches further than the road.

And that is precisely where the initiative takes an interesting turn.

Why Khuli Chana’s “What’s Next” was the perfect launchpad

The fund was launched alongside Khuli Chana’s What’s Next docu-series, a project focused on South Africans who have reinvented themselves and inspire others to do the same.

It is difficult to imagine a more fitting backdrop for an initiative built around the idea of finding your next chapter.

The series celebrates people who have refused to remain defined by where they started.

The fund aims to give charities, communities and individuals the extra push they need to move forward.

For Khuli Chana, the connection is clear.

“Reinvention takes power, and that’s exactly what this fund is about — giving people and communities the push they need to discover their next,” he says.

Guests at the exclusive Clearwater viewing watched the first episode of the series, featuring Mo Molemi, Khuli Chana’s fellow Morafe band member.

The event was attended by industry friends, with Mpho Maboi serving as MC.

The episode featuring Mo Molemi will be available on Khuli Chana’s YouTube channel at noon on Monday, 24 August.

Now South Africa gets to nominate its next success story

The launch is only the beginning.

MMSA is inviting individuals, communities, friends and families to identify a charity or person they believe deserves the power to take their next step.

And the nomination process is designed to put the spotlight on the people doing meaningful work within their communities.

Potential nominators need to create a 30-second video explaining why their chosen charity or person deserves the support.

The nomination must:

  1. Record a 30-second video.
  2. Name the project or charity.
  3. Share the location of the charity.
  4. Explain why the charity deserves the nomination.
  5. Post the video and tag Mitsubishi Motors South Africa on Facebook or Instagram.

The campaign will then move into a public voting phase.

Three weeks. Five finalists at a time. Real community impact.

Starting Friday, 28 August, the top five entries will be featured on Mitsubishi Motors’ social media pages for three weeks.

Followers will then be invited to vote for their favourite video.

Each week’s winner will be invited to the Dealer of the Year event in September and will walk away with their share of the R150,000 fund.

That turns the campaign into more than a corporate donation.

It gives communities the opportunity to tell their own stories.

It gives ordinary people a platform to highlight organisations and individuals they believe deserve recognition.

And it puts the public in the driving seat when it comes to deciding which stories should receive support.

The power is bigger than the badge

The automotive industry is naturally built around the language of power.

Kilowatts.

Torque.

Performance.

Capability.

But the 150kW Legacy Fund takes that familiar vocabulary and gives it a human meaning.

Power becomes the person trying to rebuild a community.

Power becomes the charity doing work that needs more resources.

Power becomes the opportunity to take one more step when circumstances have made the journey difficult.

That is the thinking behind the campaign.

And it explains why the Triton connection is more than a clever marketing idea.

The vehicle’s 150kW output becomes a symbol for what can happen when capability is directed towards something bigger than itself.

A different kind of “What’s Next?”

There is a common thread running through Mitsubishi Motors’ latest initiative and Khuli Chana’s docu-series.

What happens next?

For some people, it is a question of reinvention.

For others, it is about growth.

For a community project, it may be the funding needed to move from an idea to something sustainable.

And for a charity, the right support can mean reaching people who might otherwise be left behind.

The 150kW Legacy Fund is designed around that moment.

The moment when a little more power can create a different future.

MMSA’s earlier announcement described the fund as a new pillar of its community commitment, with the intention of identifying charities, communities and individuals ready to power their next chapter.

Now, that idea is moving from concept to action.

Your 30 seconds could change someone’s next chapter

This campaign asks a surprisingly simple question:

Who deserves a little more power?

It could be a charity in your neighbourhood.

A community initiative.

Or someone whose work deserves to be seen and supported.

You have 30 seconds to explain why.

The strongest entries will then compete for public votes, with weekly winners receiving their share of the R150,000 fund and an invitation to Mitsubishi Motors South Africa’s Dealer of the Year event in September.

The campaign’s message is summed up in its call:

“This is what drive looks like” when a community comes together.

And perhaps that is the most compelling part of the 150kW Legacy Fund.

It takes something associated with horsepower and turns it into human possibility.

Because power is impressive.

But shared power can be transformative.

And now, Mitsubishi Motors South Africa is asking the country to show them who deserves to find their next.

How to nominate

Record your 30-second nomination video, name the project or charity, share its location and explain why it deserves the support.

Then tag:

Facebook: Mitsubishi Motors South Africa

Instagram: Mitsubishi Motors South Africa

Entries begin from Friday, 28 August 2026.

Three weeks.

Three winning entries.

R150,000 in total.

One powerful question:

What does your next look like?
