osé-lovers are spoilt for choice these days. There are now more rosés than ever before, and the days of them being exclusively sweet are long gone.

Rosé wines, like those from the DURBANVILLE WINE VALLEY, are made from fruit that loves the sunshine about as much as the excellent Sauvignon Blancs for which the region is known. Benefitting from its proximity to the cool Atlantic Ocean, outstanding soils and higher elevation, the vineyards of Durbanville are renowned for making exceptional wine.

Durbanville rosé wines comprise a diverse selection:

  • Bloemendal Merlot Rosé’22: Easy-drinking, off-dry wine with notes of sweet berries and a rounded acidity.
  • D’Aria Blush’23: Crisp and characterised by hints of cantaloupe, rose, cherry and mulberry.
  • De Grendel Rosé’23: Dry palate with notes of watermelon, raspberry coulis and passion fruit.
  • Diemersdal Sauvignon Blanc Rosé’23: Delicate and lively, showing passion fruit, lime, cherry and strawberry.
  • Durbanville Hills Merlot Rosé’23: Elegant, fresh and crisp with flavours of ripe red berries and Turkish delight.
  • Groot Phesantekraal Syrah Rosé’23: The colour of salmon; elegant and smooth with notes of ripe strawberry.
  • Klein Roosboom Rosé’23: Candyfloss and strawberry notes show with fresh cherries and grapefruit.
  • Maastricht Pinotage Rosé’23: Notes of pomegranate, cranberry with nuances of candy floss and blossoms.
  • MeerendalPinotage Rosé ’23: A salmon-pink wine with hints of watermelon, sherbet and strawberries.

Not only are the Durbanville rosé wines finely crafted from the best vineyards by experienced wineries, they’re also exceptionally good value. Their prices vary between R84 and R115.

Enjoy Durbanville rosé as a simple refresher on a hot day or with a range of dishes including seafood like sushi and oysters to salads and even with a traditional braai.

The most desirable rosé wines are often compared to those from France’s region of Provence – pale pink, light-bodied and bearing flavours and aromas of summer berries. These define the ALLESVERLOREN WINE ESTATE Tinta Rosé exactly.

The Allesverloren Tinta Rosé ’22 is made with Tinta Barocca, a Portuguese grape the Malan-family have farmed for many years.

The juice from these red grapes is clear, but after less than two hours of processing in the winery, the skins start to transfer their colour. That is what makes Allesverloren rosé lighter than most. Only free-run juice of the grapes is used.

Allesverloren Tinta Rosé (R95) doesn’t need food to be enjoyed, but if you’re looking for a dish that works brilliantly with the wine, try Beetroot Falafel.

LOZÄRN, situated on the outskirts of Bonnievale, produces award-winning wines from a terroir typical of the world-famous Bordeaux region of France. Its renown has come from one variety in particular – Carménère, which thrives in red soils, shale and a climate suited for long, slow ripening.

The winery’s Carménère Rosé ’22 (R135) is the ideal summer sipper, and pairs beautifully with this easy-to-make prawn, coconut and tomato curry dish.

Recipe: Prawn, coconut and tomato curry

Ingredients:

  • 2 tbsn olive oil
  • 1 tbsn tomato purée
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 200 ml vegetable stock
  • 2 garlic cloves, crushed or sliced
  • 200 ml coconut cream
  • 1 green chilli, deseeded and sliced
  • 350 g raw prawn
  • 3 tbsn curry paste

Method

  1. Heat the oil in a large frying pan. Fry the onion, garlic and half of the chilli for 5 mins or until well braised. Add the curry paste and cook a minute or so more. Add the tomato purée, stock and coconut cream.
  2. Simmer on medium heat for 10 minutes, then add the prawns Cook until you can see the prawns turn opaque. Scatter the remaining chillies over.
  3. Serve with risotto, brown rice or cauliflower.

The Swartland’s Pieter Cruythoff Brut Rosé (R105) is a firm favourite for any special occasion.

Made in a rare style that combines the traditional Champagne technique to create flavour and French “Charmat” method of carbonation, for fizz.  The age-old blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir that is common in the making of Champagne is also used, along with selected Champagne yeast, to create a luxurious sparkling wine for everyday enjoyment.

Elegant packaging means that it easily makes a statement when celebration is in order.

The Brut Rosé displays bright red berry notes, a hint of rose petals, and a touch spice, making it perfect with a variety of dishes including rich chocolate desserts.
