Merchandise: The Black Friday revolution you didn’t see coming

As Black Friday approaches, the excitement starts to build and many people find themselves caught in the whirlwind of sales and discounts, rushing to grab the latest gadgets, clothing, and appliances. But, this year, it’s time to hit the pause button and reconsider where you want to invest your hard-earned cash. Instead of splurging on products that might lose their shine in a few months, why not prioritise experiences that create lasting memories?

Here are three compelling reasons to reconsider your shopping list this Black Friday:

Memories over Materials

Let’s face it, how many of those Black Friday bargains from years past are still as exciting as they were when you bought them? While shopping for products can provide instant gratification, experiences create lasting memories. Spending your money on experiences with loved ones strengthens your connections and fosters deeper relationships. Whether it’s a weekend getaway, a cooking class, or a live music event, sharing experiences brings people closer together, creating shared memories and a sense of togetherness that’s hard to replicate with material possessions. Radisson RED Rosebank’s Black Thursday event on November 16th offers just that. With the most breathtaking views of the Joburg skyline, this rooftop gathering promises to be the ultimate Black Friday pre-game event. DJ Kent, DJ Keyez from Kaya FM, their resident DJ Killamo, and Zane Gulston will provide the soundtrack to a night filled with good music, good food, and incredible vibes. Tickets can be purchased on Howler. In an era where the cost of living is on the rise, it’s more important than ever to make wise spending choices.  So instead of spending hours in long lines and crowded stores, opt for quality time spent with family and friends.

Health and Well-being

Research has shown that experiences contribute to our overall happiness and well-being.. According to a survey conducted by the Journal of Positive Psychology, individuals who regularly engage in meaningful experiences report higher levels of life satisfaction and happiness compared to those who focus solely on material possessions. The American Psychological Association notes that experiences contribute significantly to stress reduction, with 67% of respondents reporting lower stress levels after participating in enjoyable activities. Furthermore, a study published in the Journal of Consumer Psychology reveals that people derive more long-term happiness from experiential purchases, such as travel or concerts, as these create lasting positive memories. The excitement of an event, the thrill of adventure, or the relaxation of a spa day can have a positive impact on your mental and emotional health. In essence, the numbers speak for themselves— experiences provide the perfect escape from the daily grind and contribute to a happier, healthier you.

Reduced Environmental Impact

Black Friday exacerbates the global waste crisis, with up to 80% of purchased items, including their packaging, being discarded after minimal use or even without being used at all, according to the Green Alliance. The environmental impact from manufacturing is even more substantial, according to Purnell, who notes that producing an average laptop emits 100 to 200 kilograms of CO2, while the purchase of a single shirt generates a significantly higher carbon footprint. Furthermore a report from Money.co.uk, estimated that Black Friday deliveries alone unleashed over 429,000 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions. This is equivalent to approximately 435 return flights from London to New York. This data underscores the urgent need for us to reconsider our spending habits this Black Friday. In a world increasingly aware of climate change and the environmental impact of consumerism, opting for experiences over products is a sustainable choice. Products often come with packaging, manufacturing, and shipping costs that contribute to pollution and waste. Experiences, on the other hand, tend to have a smaller carbon footprint. By choosing experiences, you not only benefit yourself but also contribute to a more sustainable planet.
