All Your Mellon Mobile e-Sim Questions: Answered

Melon Mobile, Africa’s first digital telco, has launched a campaign inviting all South Africans to experience their fully customisable and super flexible mobile network — for free. So we’ve asked all the questions you’ve been dying to know, putting the power of experience in the hands of those it belongs to, your hands.

Q: What are the limitations of the connection service? Should we be worried about connection where certain legacy mobile networks struggle to connect users?
A: We’re backed by MTN, so you’re covered wherever you go in South Africa.

Q: What does the e-sim mean for people who are traveling? Or does it still have the same limitations as a legacy network sim?
A: Our eSIM connects you to Melon just like a regular SIM would, only it’s completely digital and already embedded in your phone meaning you do not have to visit a store to get going.  If your device is compatible, you can simply download the Melon App and activate yours in minutes which is a great solve for those travelling to South Africa and need a local mobile service provider.

We are currently integrating into a well-known International eSIM Roaming provider which will significantly reduce roaming charges for our users.

Q: We can port our number over from a legacy carrier, so what security do we have in the longevity of Melon Mobile compared to a carrier?
A: To port to Melon you must be a prepaid user and have the SIM from your previous provider in a device that can receive texts. Enter the number you want to keep and click confirm. Insert your Melon SIM into a device that receives texts. Wait for an SMS about the port and follow our simple instructions.

Melon is extremely well funded and our business model of being a low capex, low opex and digital only MVNO ensures our success and longevity in the industry.

Q: How are you able to achieve unlimited calls? Competition will steadily grow as ‘innovation’ remains the key word of our time, so how do you plan to set yourself apart from growing competition in coming months and years?
A: By putting the customer first Melon has designed the unlimited promo plans to provide exceptional value to consumers but for this to be sustainable we need to ensure that the product is utilised for its intended use. Which is why we set terms and conditions which state that the Unlimited packages are for personal, and not business use. If our investigation shows that a user is using our services to run their business, we may not allocate unlimited Voice & SMS’s to them.
