From today the New Brighton Library in Ibhayi can offer a free, stable public internet service to surrounding communities, thanks to assistance from the Boardwalk Hotel and Casino and a network of their own suppliers.

In addition to providing stable internet access and WiFi connectivity throughout the library, the almost R150 000 donation also includes all telecommunication costs for 12 months and a new public printer. For youngsters there is a refurbished reading corner which offers a cosy space for kids to learn and explore in.

Boardwalk General Manager Tati Tsunke says, “When the library approached us we knew we had to help as it is an important resource for the under privileged communities that it serves. Aside from being a safe place in which children can learn, adults also benefit from it. The internet connection will assist all members of the community to gain knowledge and stay up-to-date with news and, very importantly, to look for employment as so many job opportunities are only offered online these days. They will also be able to use the new printer to print out study materials, application forms and to prepare CVs for delivering to companies.”

Tsunke also said he hoped that the revamped kid’s corner with its bright and comfy décor, tables, soft furnishings and new books will engender a lifelong love of reading and learning for youngsters.

The New Brighton Library was established in the 1960s to serve as a community centre where residents could access books and information. During the turbulent 1970s and 1980s it became a safe gathering space. In the new democratic era residents have continued to flock to the library to access learning material and to gather socially. Today there is a fully equipped computer room and now, with stable online access, students can also undertake research for school projects and post-matric study.

Boardwalk’s donation of books to the value of R20 000 which will cater to all age groups from pre-school to Grade 7. The kid’s corner caters mostly for pre-school to Grade 4 learners.

In addition to Boardwalk, other suppliers who assisted include:

  • Liquid Intelligent Technologies, who provided direct internet access and sponsored the cost of a 100 Mbps internet breakout for 12 months.
  • Ricoh, who donated a printer.
  • OneEightySA, who contributed three wireless access points to boost the WiFi coverage.
  • Installation of LAN cabling for access points sponsored by HiTech.
