Love in the Time of Catan: Why Board Games Might Just Be Your Best Date Yet

Dating in 2026 can feel oddly exhausting. Between dating apps, ghosting, breadcrumbing, speed dates, and algorithms that promise chemistry but deliver confusion, genuine connection often gets lost in translation. Conversation becomes performative, first impressions feel rehearsed, and the pressure to impress can kill the moment before it even starts.

Enter the board game — humble, analogue, and quietly becoming one of the most effective tools for modern romance.

“Games are a powerful social tool. They create ease, help people open up, and show off personality in ways that aren’t overly polished,” says Stefan Roets, spokesperson for game distributor Solarpop. “On date night, a good game does more than entertain — it reveals a lot about a person.”

Because when you’re playing, you’re not scrolling, overthinking, or recycling small talk. You’re engaging, laughing, competing, collaborating — and maybe discovering just how much your date hates to lose.

Cooler Than Cupid

Summer is in full swing, and few things beat cooling off with a chilled drink and a little tabletop chaos. The current board game landscape is packed with titles that lean into humour, spontaneity, and shared absurdity — perfect ingredients for a relaxed, memorable date.

Games like Vibr-action, a dexterity game involving a vibrating device and increasingly ridiculous tasks, turn nerves into laughter fast. Horrible Therapist, where players dish out hilariously bad advice, thrives on inside jokes and playful mischief.

“These kinds of games cut through the pressure,” says Richard Wilson of Timeless Board Games in Edenvale. “We’ve seen people come in to play something like Codenames Duet for 20 minutes and end up staying for hours. They forget the awkwardness and just enjoy being together.”

Conversation Starters and Ice Breakers

For nervous first dates or established couples looking to shake things up, conversation-driven games are a safe and surprisingly revealing choice. Codenames Duet remains a favourite because it’s quick to learn, cooperative, and naturally sparks teamwork. You’ll either crack the clues and celebrate like pros or misread everything and laugh through the chaos — both outcomes work.

Prefer something faster and more chaotic? Exploding Kittens delivers exactly that. Designed by The Oatmeal creator Matthew Inman, the wildly popular card game is equal parts strategy and adorable disaster. It’s quick, ridiculous, and a perfect test of your date’s poker face.

Want Strategy? Play the Long Game

For couples who enjoy depth, plotting, and just a hint of rivalry, Catan remains the gold standard. Trading, building, negotiating, and occasionally being robbed — it’s all part of the experience.

In a dating context, it’s also revealing. Is your partner cooperative or cunning? Generous or guarded? Calm under pressure or quietly competitive? Love, it turns out, looks very different when sheep and brick are on the line.

Magic Connection

For hobby gamers, romance often begins across a playmat. The launch of Lorwyn: Eclipsed in Magic: The Gathering circles is a reminder that shared passions can be powerful connectors.

“Couples who play together stay together,” says Roets. “And Magic fans are some of the most passionate players we’ve seen.”

Whether it’s deck-building at home or attending events together, hobby gaming offers ongoing connection — not just a one-night spark.

Friends, Then More

Board gaming isn’t only about dating; it’s about community. And sometimes, romance grows naturally from that space.

Jateen Algu, manager of The Big Bang store in uMhlanga, has seen it firsthand. “Board gamers are a growing, social community. People meet at in-store events, play together regularly, and some of those friendships evolve into something more,” he says.

It’s chemistry with meeples — and it’s not limited to couples. Whether you’re dating, hanging out with friends, celebrating Valentine’s or Galentine’s, board games are inclusive experiences designed to connect people beyond the score sheet.

Why Games Work

Board games create shared focus. They give your hands something to do, your mind something to engage with, and your heart room to relax. They replace pressure with play and performance with presence.

So maybe ditch the overpriced dinner and the forced conversation. Because love, like a good game, is always better when you play.

Game Night Date Tips

• Match the mood: Flirty, silly, or strategic — choose accordingly
• Keep it chill: It’s a date, not a tournament
• Add snacks: Popcorn, Slush Puppie, and games are a winning combo
• Laugh a little: The scoreboard isn’t the point
