South Africa’s Gig Economy Faces a Bigger Question

Are Ride-Hailing Drivers Truly Protected?

Long before the morning rush begins, thousands of South African ride-hailing drivers are already making critical decisions that will shape their day.

Will today’s fuel price allow for a profitable shift? Will enough trip requests come through? Will the cost of keeping a vehicle on the road outweigh the day’s earnings?

These questions have become a daily reality for drivers working in South Africa’s growing gig economy, where there are no guaranteed salaries, no fixed working hours and no certainty about demand.

Instead, income is influenced by changing ride volumes, fluctuating fuel prices and the ongoing cost of maintaining vehicles that spend almost every day on the road.

For many South Africans, however, gig work remains one of the few available income opportunities in a country where unemployment continues to limit traditional employment options.

As the industry matures, the conversation is beginning to shift beyond earning potential to a broader question: Are ride-hailing platforms doing enough to support and protect the drivers who keep them moving?

Giving Drivers More Control Over Their Earnings

According to Ashif Black, Country Representative for inDrive South Africa, one of the most significant developments within the sector has been the move towards pricing models that allow drivers greater control over what they earn.

Unlike traditional algorithm-based fare systems, inDrive’s peer-to-peer model enables drivers and passengers to negotiate fares directly.

“In a cost environment shaped by volatile fuel prices, drivers see the ability to influence earnings in real time as a form of agency instead of just another feature,” says Black.

The approach gives drivers more flexibility to respond to changing operating costs rather than relying solely on automated pricing.

Driver Welfare Goes Beyond Income

While fair earnings remain important, financial considerations are only one part of the conversation.

Safety has become equally significant when drivers evaluate whether a platform genuinely supports their wellbeing.

Increasingly, expectations are shifting away from reactive support after incidents occur towards preventative measures that provide protection throughout every stage of a journey.

Safety Begins Before Anyone Gets Into the Car

Across the ride-hailing industry, stronger verification processes are becoming an essential part of platform safety.

Identity verification, liveness checks and AI-supported moderation of user profiles are increasingly being used to reduce anonymity and prevent repeat offenders from repeatedly creating new accounts.

Systems that detect suspicious activity or multiple account registrations are also becoming an important safeguard.

The underlying principle is simple.

If platforms cannot confidently verify the identity of users before a trip begins, both drivers and passengers face greater risk once the journey is underway.

Technology Supporting Safer Journeys

Modern safety features are now extending well beyond basic emergency assistance.

During active trips, several technologies are becoming increasingly common across the industry, including:

  • In-app call masking to protect personal phone numbers.
  • Trip-sharing features that allow trusted contacts to monitor journeys.
  • Emergency SOS functionality for immediate assistance.
  • Route monitoring systems capable of detecting unusual deviations, unexpected stops or significant route changes.

When irregular activity is detected, automated alerts and real-time check-ins can help identify potential concerns before a trip ends.

As an additional safety measure, inDrive has introduced secure audio recording.

The recordings are encrypted, securely stored and only accessed when an incident has been formally reported. The feature is intended to support investigations, assist with dispute resolution and discourage misconduct during trips.

Safety Doesn’t End When the Ride Does

Expectations also extend beyond the journey itself.

Platforms are increasingly expected to provide structured incident reporting systems that prioritise serious cases, improve response times and strengthen accountability throughout the resolution process.

Rather than treating safety as an optional feature, the industry is moving towards making it an integrated part of daily operations.

Building Protection Beyond the App

Safety is also expanding beyond digital tools.

Partnership-based services that provide drivers with access to vehicle tracking, recovery services and emergency assistance at preferential rates are becoming part of a wider support ecosystem.

These additional services reflect a broader shift in how driver welfare is being viewed.

Instead of relying solely on in-app features, platforms are increasingly expected to create practical support systems that extend into drivers’ everyday working lives.

The Future of the Gig Economy Depends on Driver Protection

South Africa’s ride-hailing industry has undoubtedly created opportunities for thousands of people seeking flexible income.

Yet as the sector continues to grow, attention is turning towards whether those opportunities are supported by systems that make gig work sustainable over the long term.

As Black concludes:

“The question facing South Africa’s ride-hailing sector is no longer whether platforms are creating opportunity, because they certainly are. The question now is whether that opportunity is supported by systems that protect the people who rely on it every day.”

As conversations around fair earnings, safety technology and platform accountability continue to evolve, one thing is becoming increasingly clear: protecting drivers is no longer simply a competitive advantage—it is becoming a fundamental expectation for the future of South Africa’s gig economy.
